Peru’s President Merino Resigns Following Deadly Protests

Peruvian President Manuel Merino resigned on Sunday, six days after taking office, following deadly protests against his government.

“I present my irrevocable resignation,” Mr. Merino said in a televised address. “It is time for peace and unity.”

Peruvians celebrated his resignation, cheering in the city’s plazas and honking car horns in this coastal city of nine million people.
