Suddenly, Uncle Sam Wants to Bankroll You

Since Sept. 11, Mr. Louie's staff has fielded calls from over 400 companies -- more than four times the normal volume for a three-month period. And the calls are bringing in results. At the invitation of I.B.M., for example, In-Q-Tel executives visited the company's vaunted research labs and are now negotiating rights for the C.I.A. to use some of its technology. All told, 60 companies, mainly start-ups, are on what In-Q-Tel calls a fast track for further investigation and possible investment.

Flu Outbreak Causing Pandemic Concerns

However, mystery surrounds the US incidents because it's unclear how they caught the virus. None of the seven people were in contact with pigs, which is how people usually catch swine flu. And only a few were in contact with each other, the CDC said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

From an earlier version of this same story ...
This most recent version of swine flu was first identified in two children in Imperial and San Diego County in southern California earlier this week. Officials say the virus may have already existed for a while or may be entirely new. They added that it was discovered thanks to improved testing facilities and expanded disease surveillance; one at a Navy clinic and the other at a specialized clinic that monitors border communities.

The announcement came Thursday that investigators had turned up five new cases. The new patients include a father and his daughter in San Diego County, a middle-aged woman in Imperial County, and two 16-year old boys who are friends near San Antonio, Texas.

The two cases in Texas have left researchers particularly mystified. Though the young boy from San Diego County reported flying to Texas earlier this month to visit family, he claims to have stayed in the Dallas area – some 270 miles north of San Antonio.

Testimony: Settlers assault pregnant woman with sticks and stones, April '09

Being pregnant, I couldn’t run fast. After about one hundred meters, the settlers caught me. One of them hit me in my right arm and left leg with his stick. The other settler threw a stone at me, which hit me in the left leg. Then one of them pushed me, and I fell onto some thorns. My arm and leg hurt a lot. When I fell, the two settlers left me and ran toward the farmers and other shepherds. I remained there, crying. I was in terrible pain.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, beating a pregnant woman makes young male Israeli settlers feel "macho"?!?!?

, This is really mentally ill behavior.

And the ugly irony here is, some of these guys are probably great grand-children of Holocaust survivors.

The Destabilization of Pakistan: Finding Clarity in the Baluchistan Conundrum

A new dirty game of geopolitics has already started in Baluchistan, Pakistan. To understand the recent wave of violence in Baluchistan we must understand the vested interests in Baluchistan. The root cause of violence in Baluchistan is not internal poverty or lack of development but the covert operations of foreign intelligence agencies. Internal issues might act as catalysts to inflame the situation but the root cause is foreign interference in internal affairs of Baluchistan.

The Psychologists of Torture

One of the key, if underreported, findings in Tuesday’s bombshell Senate committee report on the Bush-era treatment of U.S. military detainees was the role of civilian and military psychologists in devising, directing and overseeing the torture of prisoners.

Understanding the role of these professionals should be a "specific focus" of an investigation into the use of these tactics, according to Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), which has condemned the tactics as illegal and medically unethical.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mengele would have been so proud of these guys: I sure as hell am not.

Why?!?!? Because a country which legitimizes torture cannot, for one second, have its representatives speak about freedom, human dignity, or human rights without getting rightfully booted off the international stage as hypocrites and liars.

If we are silent, knowing that this government legitimized torture, we become accomplices after the fact.

Everyone who signed off on torture, from former President Bush on down, should be prosecuted within the fullest extent of the law. Only then can we begin to restore this country, both in the eyes of its citizens, and the eyes of the world, as a moral country with a conscience.

CDC says too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hearing reading this statement, you have to shake your head and wonder: just what kind of colossal failure of imagine and planning has left the CDC impotent to defend the American public, which it is charged to protect, against this outbreak??

As the victims of Katrina learned the terrifyingly hard way, the government isn't going to anything to help you here; you're on your own.

Please, do your own due diligence about foods and supplements which can assist the body fight against flu and other viruses.

"... The Horrible Truth"

Rather than talking about three Iraqis being killed today, or two dozen, we are again talking about several dozen, and over 100 wounded, as we are seeing recently. Each of these Iraqis have been killed as a direct result of the US occupation of Iraq - their blood splattered on the hands of President Obama, who, during a visit to Baghdad's airport on April 7, praised the US military for their "extraordinary achievement" in Iraq.

Venture capital firm set to reap rewards on swine flu

The swine flu outbreak is likely to benefit one of the most prolific and successful venture capital firms in the United States: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Thomson Reuters Private Equity Week reported on Friday.

Hezbollah win in Lebanon poll would be big upset

With quiet campaigning and moderate talk, Hezbollah is building its strength for Lebanon's June 7 parliament elections — and the militant Shiite Muslim group and its allies stand a good chance of winning.

Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, has even said that if the coalition wins, it would invite its opponents to join in a national unity government to ensure stability. His deputy, Sheik Naim Kassem, says the West will have to accept the election results.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Hezbollah does win the Lebanese election in a process deemed free and fair, the following should happen.

First, Israel, in no way, should not be allowed to go on a military rampage against the Lebanese people for the choice they have made, as they did when Palestinians, fed up with the complete corruption of Hamas, voted Hezbollah in.

Finally, should this come about, the West is going to ultimately need to deal with Hezbollah as a legitimate political force to be reckoned with.

We've managed to deal with China, and we've managed to deal with Russia, geopolitically.

Surely, we can somehow manage to deal with Hezbollah.

Tension grips Buner as military operation looms

After days of deliberations, the government on Friday decided to deploy the Pakistan Army troops in the Buner district in an apparent move to launch a military operation against the Taliban, who reportedly quit the town on the appeal of Tehrik Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad.

However, when reached by telephone, Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said the military leadership had not yet received any order from the government to launch the military operation in Buner.

Petraeus Calls On Pakistan To Redirect Military Focus

Gen. David H. Petraeus warned yesterday that al-Qaeda and Taliban extremists in Pakistan are posing "an ever more serious threat to Pakistan's very existence," and he said that Pakistan's leaders must act to counter the challenge with a well-trained military counterinsurgency force.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Getting the Pakistani government to "...reconfigure its military forces to deal with counterinsurgency operations rather than to continue its conventional focus on traditional rival India" will be a herculean task, given the history of these two countries.

The current government of Pakistan, riddled as it is with corruption and a consistent tendency to ignore popular outrage at the lack of economic growth, is in a death spiral.

And that issue about Centomm actually controlling the money and how it is spent?!?

That will not go down at all well for the Pakistani government, which is traditionally accustomed to taking US aid money, and not having to account for a dime.

Even more curious about this breakout is the timing. NYT again:

Mexico’s flu season is usually over by now, but health officials have noticed a significant spike in flu cases since mid-March. The W.H.O. said there had been 800 cases in Mexico in recent weeks, 60 of them fatal, of a flu like illness that appeared to be more serious than the regular seasonal flu.

As if to emphasise the uselessness of more government regulation, to those who call for more government regulation of every aspect of life, if there ever was a time to warn about travel to Mexico, it is now. Yet, because of political reasons it won't happen. The NYT reports one helluva contradiction from the CDC:

Reacting to outbreak

TheNews.com.mx - NACHA CATTAN - Mexico City was swept up in a wave of alarm on Friday, prompting some residents to rush to pharmacies or hole up in their homes to escape a potentially deadly swine flu virus.

Parents picked up their children from school early Friday, as classes were suspended in Mexico City and surrounding municipalities. Some residents said they opened all the windows in their homes to increase ventilation; others stocked up on surgical masks, reportedly clearing out many large drug stores.

Companies responded by sending people with flu-like symptoms home, while some offices - an entire Banamex headquarters building on Reforma, for instance - were closed for the day.

Passengers Subdue 'Unruly' Man Who Charged Cockpit

A plane was diverted to Logan Airport just after 10 p.m. Friday after a passenger on a transatlantic flight tried to break into the cockpit and was subdued by passengers, Massachusetts State Police said.

The incident was not terrorism, according to officials at Massport, the agency that runs the airport. The passenger, identified as Itay Atmor, may have been suffering from an anxiety attack, officials said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Why was this not terrorism? Because the guy who tried to break into the cockpit was an Israeli, you silly! Had the guy banging on the door been Iranian, THEN it would be an act of terror!!!!

Apr 25 08:07

Torturing detainee may have produced false terror alerts

There were also two peculiar episodes of heightened security alerts in the US in April and May, which were said at the time to have been based on information obtained from Abu Zubaydah. These vague and ultimately implausible threats gave a strong impression that Abu Zubaydah might have been inventing al Qaeda plots simply to satisfy his interrogators.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is apparent that no one in the White House under the Bush administration ever bothered to pick up a history book, ever.

Because had they done so, they would have understood - as intelligent people have from the time of the Catholic Inquisition - that torture isn't designed to get the truth: it is designed to get a confession. This means that the tortured individual will say anything he thinks his torturers want to hear in order to get the torture to stop.

So the CIA actually thought they could wrest great truths from the use of torture?!?! In the immortal words of Tony Soprano, "fuggetaboutit!"

Bush aware of 'unreliability' of torture info

In July 2002, the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency notified the former administration that torture yields 'unreliable information,' just weeks before the Justice Department authorized use of harsh interrogation techniques, The Washington Post reported.

Politically Correct BS from the Center For Disease Control

With a serious deadly flu threat emanating from Mexico, the CDC chooses to warn clinicians about patients who may have been in San Diego County, California or San Antonio, Texas but not a word about patients who may have travelled in Mexico.

The Housing Crash: The Data Confirms a Downward Momentum

Why is the media misleading the public about housing? The housing market is crashing. There are no "green shoots" or "glimmers of hope"; the market is worn to a stump, it's kaput. Still, whenever new housing figures are released, they're crunched and tweaked and spin-dried until they tell a totally different story; a hopeful story about an elusive "light in the tunnel". But there is no light in the tunnel; it's a myth. The truth is, there's no sign of a turnaround or a "bottom" in housing at all; not yet, at least. The real estate market is freefalling and it looks like its got a long way to go. So why is the media still peddling the same "rose-colored" claptrap that put the country in this pickle to begin with?

No Proof Torture Stopped Terror Attacks

Former Vice President Dick Cheney has requested the release of two CIA reports which he claims will strengthen his assertions that the torture of detainees helped thwart terrorist plots, but already released memos from the CIA inspector general point out that there was no conclusive proof that the harsh interrogation tactics helped the Bush Administration thwart any “specific imminent attacks.”

I was charmed by the lyric "the signs were there you should have bought connections before" for it's cynical-realism. Something to think about.

Move fast in the tunnels of the underground.

How night owls are cleverer and richer than people who rise early

It has long been held that the early bird catches the worm. But it is the night owl that lasts the distance, research shows.

It found that late risers tire less quickly than those who make a point of getting up at the crack of dawn.

The study is likely to be embraced by anyone tired of being branded lazy for their love of a lie-in.

And it adds to growing evidence that it is night owls that rule the roost.

Time for another coffee...

Iraqi suicide bombers at Baghdad Shia shrine claim 60 lives

Major General Qassem Atta, a military spokesman, said the bombings were a direct consequence of the arrest of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the country's most wanted man. He also said he expected a revenge bombing campaign to intensify.

So an imaginary terrorist is captured and violence flares up only nine weeks before US troops are to withdraw from Iraqi cities. What timing.

Jury Nullification, Your Awesome Power

Friday, April 24, 2009
By: Alan Stang

"This week let’s look at a power you have that is equally devastating, a power that could bring our communist nightmare to its knees, that you can begin using right now with absolutely no risk. It is another awesome power the totalitarian, legal bozos have labored long to conceal. It is called "jury nullification.""
"All you need do is vote for acquittal. They won’t ask you why. If they do, furious, or just frustrated by your monkey wrench vote, you will not say you did it to nullify the law. If you say that, they will throw you into jail. So you will either say nothing or you will smile the subservient smile and say merely that you thought he was innocent."

Fed Admits "Stress Tests" Are a Sham

The "stress tests" were supposed to triage those banks worth saving from those which were already too far gone to save.

But as Nouriel Roubini, FDIC chief Sheila Bair, Nobel economist Paul Krugman, former senior S&L regulator William Black and many others said, the "stress tests" are a sham.

Well, they've been proven right.

The Fed said today that - instead of letting the insolvent banks fail - which is what virtually all of the independent experts are recommending (see this for example), the Fed will rescue all banks which fail the stress test.

It appears that among the real reasons for the university’s attempts to discipline me since September 2005 and for its recent most harsh actions against me under President Allan Rock’s mandate might be the administration’s opposition to my political views about the Palestine-Israel conflict, which, starting in 2005, I have expressed in articles, on radio, in my blog postings, at public venues, and in my classes. In September 2005 the dean cancelled my Physics and the Environment course following a complaint (regarding an email comment about Zionism), channelled through the university’s Canadian Studies Institute director Pierre Anctil to the VP-Academic.

the key to the opposition to ahmadinejad

The 23 countries that walked out of the Geneva Conference during Ahmadinejad’s speech are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The 27 EU members are the above plus Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland, which had already decided not to send delegates at all. The other 5 countries which had already decided not to send delegates at all are Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand and the US. So the formula for the bloc claiming that Ahmadinejad is ‘racist’ is: EU, plus Israel, plus the surviving ‘Anglo-Saxon’ or ‘English-speaking’ — i.e., white colonial — states: Australia & New Zealand, the USA & Canada.

Mexico shut down schools, museums, libraries and state-run theaters across its overcrowded capital Friday in hopes of containing a swine flu outbreak that authorities say killed at least 20 people — and perhaps dozens more. ACLU: Pentagon to release images of prisoner abuse

The Defense Department will release a "substantial number" of photos depicting abuse of prisoners by U.S. personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, the American Civil Liberties Union said late Thursday.

The photos will be made available by May 28, the ACLU said, citing a letter dated Thursday from the Justice Department to a federal judge in New York. The photos' release is in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the ACLU in 2004 and will include images from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan at locations other than Abu Ghraib, the ACLU said.

Outrage at 'skin and bones' Miss Universe model

Australia's Miss Universe competition found itself under scrutiny yesterday as doctors and dieticians questioned the inclusion of a finalist they claimed was severely underweight.

Dietician Melanie McGrice told Australia's Daily Mail that at 180cm and weighing just 49kg, 19-year-old Stephanie Naumoska was well under the World Health Organisation's benchmark for malnutrition.

"I would certainly want to be doing an assessment of her diet to make sure she doesn't have some type of eating disorder," she said.

The soldiers then shoot Bassem point blank with a high velocity gas grenade which kills him within five minutes.

New flu strain is a genetic mix

It is genetically different from the fully human H1N1 seasonal influenza virus that has been circulating globally for the past few years. The new flu virus contains DNA typical to avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses.

The Great Credit Card Battle To Come

What's happening to credit card lending is a smaller replay of what happened to mortgage lending. For years, banks used every gimmick possible to get the public to use their cards -- regardless of the credit worthiness of the customer. They lured borrowers with low "teaser" rates. They told borrowers they could get by paying minimum balances.

Stress Tests Fabricated to Produce Bullish Surveys

In my view the stress test survey is just a “show” for the investment markets and in the end really doesn’t mean very much because credit quality is still deteriorating. Bank balance sheets remain highly vulnerable to more losses later this year, including credit cards, commercial real estate, home equity loans, residential mortgages and commercial/industrial loans.

FLASHBACK - The mysterious deaths of top microbiologists

Now, statistically, it's possible, even likely, that one or two of these microbiologists legitimately were killed in random accidents. But for so many to die in such a short while exceeds all reasonable bounds of statistics. Prudence would demand an investigation, not the "ho hum" attitude of the government which even today continues to issue dire warnings to the general population of how much we are all in danger from "bioterrorism".

So, let's take a moment and step away from the perpetual fear-mongering of the media (and Rumsfeld) as they assure us another attack IS coming (with a certainty which suggests inside information on the subject) and assume for a moment that some party has indeed decided to "liquidate" weapons research infectious disease experts.
