Afghanistan Mineral Riches: Beware the Hype

That this story has gotten front page placement in the country's top newspaper has Mother Jones' Kevin Drum, OTB's Doug Mataconis, and others questioning the timing. Ambinder, noting the on-the-record quotes from the highest levels of the U.S. military, goes so far as to characterize this as "a massive information operation."

Aside from the fact that the news isn't actually new and that there's good reason to believe that the potential benefits are being wildly exaggerated for political reasons, we should also be skeptical of the idea that Afghanistan is going to suddenly leap forward several centuries into modernity by virtue of a natural resource find

The IPCC consensus on climate change was phoney, says IPCC insider

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change misled the press and public into believing that thousands of scientists backed its claims on manmade global warming, according to Mike Hulme, a prominent climate scientist and IPCC insider. The actual number of scientists who backed that claim was “only a few dozen experts,” he states in a paper for Progress in Physical Geography, co-authored with student Martin Mahony.

Human Rights Advocate Sentenced to Six Months in Federal Prison for Civil Disobedience at the School of the Americas

Ken Hayes, Father Louis Vitale and Nancy Gwin, the three human rights advocates who were arrested together with Michael Walli, were each sentenced in January 2010 to six months in prison as well - the maximum allowed for the charge of tresspass. The extremely harsh sentences are intended to deter others from following the example of the 'SOAW 4.'

"Those who speak out for justice are facing prison time while SOA-trained torturers and assassins are operating with impunity," said SOA Watch founder Father Roy Bourgeois.

Church Makes Girl Apologize for Being Raped

Like many victims of rape, she felt shame and was afraid she would be blamed. After she realized she was pregnant, she told her rapist, Ernest Willis. Willis offered to drive her out of state for an abortion or to punch her in the stomach to force a miscarriage. At that point, Tina thought she should tell her mother, who advised her to tell her Pastor, Chuck Phelps.

It turns out, Tina was right. She was blamed. Phelps reacted by telling her to go before the congregation and apologize for her sins. He said that while Willis might have been 99% responsible, Tina needed to be punished by admitting to her 1%.

"He told me that I should be happy that I didn't live in Old Testament times because I would have been stoned."

61% Underfunded Illinois Teachers Pension Fund Goes For Broke, Becomes Next AIG-In-Waiting By Selling Billions In CDS

"TRS is largely on the risky side of the contracts, selling and writing OTC derivatives, including credit default swaps, insurance-like contracts that guarantee payment in the event of a default, that were blamed in part for the 2008 collapse of Lehman Bros. and bailout of insurance giant American International Group Inc., or AIG." Demonstrating just how far the fund is willing to go in the "for broke" category, knowing full well that if it repeats AIG's implosion, the government will likely bail it out, is the disclosure that a stunning 81.5% of the fund's investments are considered risky - this means it is the fourth-riskiest investment portfolio for a pension fund in the U.S!

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would disagree with the writer on one issue, which is we have just blown by socialism on the way to a fascist economic system, where profits are privatized, and losses are born by the public.

One has to wonder just how many other teacher's retirement programs are in this kind of mess right now.

One has to wonder; with a US government deficit running at 13 trillion dollars, how is the US going to bail out either this fund, or any similar fund experiencing this kind of risk.

Moody's Latest To Downgrade Greek Debt To Junk

Moody's Investors Service slashed Greece's credit rating to junk status on Monday in a new blow to the debt-ridden country that is under intense international scrutiny after narrowly avoiding default last month.

A Moody's statement said it was cutting Greece's government bond ratings by four notches to Ba1 from A3, with a stable outlook for the next 12-18 months. It was the second of the three major agencies to accord Greek bonds junk status. Standard & Poor's did the same in late April.

The downgrades reflect concern that the country could fail to meet its obligations to cut its deficit and pay down its debt - which the Greek government says is out of the question.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US government may well find itself in the same situation in the not too distant future, looking at the current ballooning deficit.

Discovery’ of Afghan riches a pro-war PR scam?

The ‘discovery’ of Afghanistan’s minerals will sound pretty silly to old timers,” a "retired former senior US official" tells Politico's Laura Rosen. “When I was living in Kabul in the early 1970’s the [US government], the Russians, the World Bank, the UN and others were all highly focused on the wide range of Afghan mineral deposits. Cheap ways of moving the ore to ocean ports has always been the limiting factor.”

So why is this news now? To many, the story's timing suggests a Pentagon public relations campaign designed to extend public support for the war with the hope that, in time, Afghanistan may be able to raise itself out of abject poverty.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This smells like a campaign to try to give the US public a reason to believe that prolonging this war has any kind of an upside for the US, which it does not.

At the end of the day, the money will be going to private corporations with Afghans seeing precious little of it, while more of our troops come home maimed for life, or in body bags, for perhaps years to come.

The Republican U.S. Senate race focused Sunday on relations with Israel, with both Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina defending the actions of Israeli troops who killed nine people after boarding a Turkish ship carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

DeVore fired up several hundred pro-Israel demonstrators Sunday afternoon who gathered on Wilshire Boulevard in front of the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger also spoke.

Why is Obama refusing to waive the Jones Act? He's aiding in the destruction of the Gulf

Obama has refused to waive the Jones Act. His Administration keeps putting the blame on the Coast Guard who puts the blame on others for not requesting the Jones Act be waived. Yet a simple Executive Order signed by Obama could waive the Jones Act in about 3 minutes, less time than it takes Obama to set up a tee on the golf course. The Gulf is in dire need of all the help it can get. When foreign entities with better expertise and equipment in oil spills offer to help, why is Obama refusing? While Obama dithers in his bad leadership of the Oil Spill, the Gulf Coast dies more and more each day.

Webmaster's Commentary:

My sense is that the Obama administration doesn't want foreign companies to actually assess the full extent of the damage to the Gulf Coast, and go public with that knowledge, because the damage is far worse than either the Administration, or BP, wants the American public to know.

Obama to Gulf Coast Residents: Normal Will Return

President Barack Obama is promising Gulf Coast residents that the region will be left in better shape than it was before the massive BP oil spill that fouled the waters and threatened their way of life.

On a visit to the Alabama coast Monday, Obama said his administration will do everything it can, working all day every day, to make sure that coastal communities now suffering economically get back on their feet.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is time to invoke the 25th Amendment because this man has gone totally insane.

First, one look at Prince William Sound, site of the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989, shows that "normal" never came back. Of course, what Obama may really be saying is, "Get used to it, because this is the NEW normal!"

Second, all the posturing about what Obama will do in the future, including his renewed push for a carbon tax and "mandated lifestyle behavior" is a smoke screen to conceal the fact that the US Government allowed this disaster to happen. Obama is tal,ing about new agencies and new procedures but the fact is that there were already agencies (the MMS) and procedures (drilling mud before capping, acoustic cutoffs, etc.) in place that did not work because they were allowed to be bypassed. Any new agencies and procedures put into place will also be bypassed in the name of profit if we first do not replace the government that taxes the people to add lifeboats to the Titanic, then leaves half of them on the dock at sailing time. Obama's posturing is an attempt to transfer the responsibility for this mess from himself and the corporations onto the general population, which is perfectly in accord with the theory of fascist economics.

The U.S. wins the right to abduct innocent people with impunity

The Supreme Court today denied a petition of review from Maher Arar, the Canadian and Syrian citizen who was abducted by the U.S. Government at a stopover at JFK Airport when returning to Canada in 2002, held incommunicado for two weeks, and then rendered to Syria, where he spent the next 10 months being tortured, even though — as everyone acknowledges — he was guilty of absolutely nothing. Arar sued the U.S. Government for what was done to him, and last November, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal of his lawsuit on the ground that courts have no right to interfere in these decisions of the Executive Branch. That was the decision which the U.S. Supreme Court let stand today, ending Arar’s attempt to be compensated for what was done to him.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Actually, the reason we HAVE a US Supreme Court is to serve as a check and balance on both the executive and legislative branches and in point of fact the US Supreme Court has intervened on the decisions of the executive branch, case in point when the US Supreme Court blocked Harry Truman's nationalization of the Steel Industry to forestall a strike.

In Marbury v. Madison, the US Supreme Court affirmed the Constitution as the supreme law of the land leading Chief Justice John Marshall to establish the power of judicial review: the power of the Court not only to interpret the constitutionality of a law or statute but also to carry out the process and enforce its decision. Inasmuch as the President is the President only so long as he enforces United States law, review of his decisions is the proper purview of the United States Supreme Court.

Boycotting Israel, politically, economically, culturally and intellectually has been a means of resistance for years, albeit with ebbs and tides in terms of its effectiveness. Palestinians boycotted Israeli products during the first Intifada in the last 1980s and the early 90s and international groups have been intellectually and culturally boycotting Israel for years, something which took on particular force after the creation of the Boycott and Divestment and Sanctions movement, which went global in 2005. Naturally, Israel was far from happy about those who dared to challenge Israel's image of democracy and freedom.

The one hour long raw footage released by the Cultures of Resistance Foundation (CoR) of the 31 May Israeli attack aboard the Mavi Marmara shows clear evidence of indiscriminate Israeli fire aboard the ship. Legal Firm Plans to Threaten up to 150,000 U.S. Citizens for Film Downloads

According to the USGS's claims, the organization is currently tracking 300 films each with 500 tracked file-sharers, making for a total of around 150,000 potential targets at risk of receiving a settlement letter. USGS suggests that it can send a "speculative invoice" to these individuals demanding between a $1,500 to $2,500 USD settlement. That means that taking the middle of the settlement figures ($2,000), the USGS could try to pull in as much as $300M USD in revenue from the scheme, and pocket $210M USD of that sum.

ACLU lawyer Rachel Myers argues that this scheme may be an abuse of the U.S. legal system. She writes:

Ex-prisoner: Administrative detention = mental slaughter

In Israel 2010, a person can vanish off the face of the earth without anyone knowing: The number of Palestinians held in administrative detention in Israel is now lowest since 2001, but according to a B'Tselem report on the situation of human rights in the West Bank and Gaza, 222 people are still being held in detention without being convicted of anything.

According to the report, the Israeli policy contradicts all the rules of international law regarding the use of administrative detention, while seriously infringing on the detainees' rights. B'Tselem says Israel is mocking the protection provided by the law, going against freedom and the right for a fair procedure.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Please note: two US Senators, Mc Cain and Lieberman, want the US to copy this practice of Israel's. One could well characterize this is as an attempt toward the Israelification of American law.

The bill they have introduced into Congress is titled the "Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act. As reported in:

This bill "...would empower the U.S. military to arrest anyone, U.S. citizen or otherwise, who is suspected of terrorist associations and detain them indefinitely, without right to a trial."

Should this legislation ever be passed (and remember, no one in their right minds ever believed that so draconian a piece of legislation as the Patriot Act would ever get through Congress until after 9/11), this country can say a fond farewell to the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and anything remotely resembling due process.

Red Cross: Gaza closure: not another year!

The serious incidents that took place on 31 May between Israeli forces and activists on a flotilla heading for Gaza once again put the spotlight on the acute hardship faced by the population in the Gaza Strip.

As the ICRC has stressed repeatedly, the dire situation in Gaza cannot be resolved by providing humanitarian aid. The closure imposed on the Gaza Strip is about to enter its fourth year, choking off any real possibility of economic development. Gazans continue to suffer from unemployment, poverty and warfare, while the quality of Gaza's health care system has reached an all-time low.

Iran: The next steps

The cause is just. Now more people must join it.

Though the new resolution might stop short of shutting down Iran’s financial links to the outside world, it does include a clause urging nations to block transactions that “could” help Teheran’s nuclear program.

Interpreted broadly, this is an invitation to take additional steps against Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

1. Israel, which has nuclear weapons, refuses to sign the NNPT, or allow its nuclear sites to be inspected.

2. Iran, which is a member of the NNPT, therefore allows regular inspections of its nuclear sites by the IAEA. Iran has no nuclear weapons program: they are building a power plant.

3. To date, no nuclear materials have been reported missing, nor has any nuclear material been found to be enriched for their power plant over and above that which is necessary to fuel a power plant.

4. The unilateral and multilateral sanctions this article is suggesting can most probably be best characterized as a prelude to war between the US and Iran.

5. We may well not win such a war, because the US government has, by design, allowed almost all of our manufacturing base to be offshored, and without the kind of manufacturing base we had during World War II, such a war will be unsustainable.

Any questions?!?!?

Israel promises to ease its three year blockade of Gaza

Tony Blair announced today that Israel would agree to re-open crossings into Gaza for everyday goods within days, bringing to an end its strict three-year crackdown on supplies.

Memo to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu: the siege should not just be "eased": it should be ended, and right now.

President Obama compares Gulf of Mexico oil leak to 9/11

On the eve of his fourth trip to the region and ahead of a national address from the Oval Office, Mr Obama vowed to seize the opportunity to push for “a visionary energy policy that we so vitally need and has been absent for so long”.

“In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come,” Mr Obama told the influential news website Politico.

“One of the biggest leadership challenges for me going forward is going to be to make sure that we draw the right lessons from this disaster.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Translation: Obama is going to use this catastrophe to push through carbon taxes.

If this legislation passes (assuming Obama doesn't do it via Executive Order Fiat)this will absolutely crush any potential US economic recovery.

Why Do Jews Commit Massacres?

Terrorist Brothers in Arms - Rahm Emanuel, Chief of Staff of the Obama White House, spent a week in Israel just before Israel's attack on the Freedom Flotilla. Emanuel, an Israeli citizen and son of an Irgun terrorist, met with prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on May 26, 2010. The Obama administration refused to condemn Israel's criminal action on the high seas in which at least nine unarmed civilians were killed.

Iranian aid ships head for Gaza

Iran is sending aid ships to blockaded Gaza, state radio said on Monday -- a move likely to be considered provocative by Israel which accuses Tehran of arming the Palestinian enclave's Islamist rulers, Hamas.

One ship left port on Sunday and another will depart by Friday, loaded with food, construction material and toys, the report said. The boats would be part of international efforts to break Israel's isolation of the Gaza Strip.

"Until the end of the Gaza blockade, Iran will continue to ship aid," said an official at Iran's Society for the Defence of the Palestinian Nation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Ahmedinejad has played this like a chess master.

If Israel attacks Iran, it will be because Iran is attempting to break the siege of Gaza, and not because of a non-existent nuclear weapons program.

This gives Iran the moral high ground, and the initiative.

Turkey dismisses Israeli probe into raid, warns it may revise ties

Turkey strongly dismissed Monday a commission established by Israel to investigate the deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship and warned it may revise bilateral ties with Israel if a U.N.-led inquiry is not launched.

Netanyahu warns: Dark days ahead

"The flotilla to Gaza was not a one-time thing. We find ourselves in the midst of a difficult and continuous battle against the State of Israel. The flood of hate is being led by Israel's enemies all over the world," Netanyahu added.

"They are trying to pinch us with the metal pinchers of missiles and terror, and revoke Israel's right to defend itself as well as the rights of IDF soldiers to protect their own lives."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu: your hubristic paranoia is showing here, sir, and it sounds like you are about to go off the deep end.

The world reaction to an Israeli hijacking and massacre on the high seas is (rightly and logically) that of outrage.

But the fundamental problem here is the continued Israeli siege of Gaza, which is causing malnutrition in 14% of Gazan children, according to UNICEF figures.

Even the normally geopolitically low-key Red Cross has come out with a statement that the siege of Gaza is illegal, under international law. When the Red Cross makes a statement like that, you know you have a problem.

The siege is not contributing anything to Israel's safety and security; it was simply put in place to cause the Hamas party (legally elected, I might add) to collapse. But if anything, the siege has made Hamas stronger in the eyes of Gazan Palestinians.

The siege of Gaza has failed, Mr. Prime Minister: it is high time to end it.

The second time this week, the London Times has run articles submitted by Israeli intelligence, irresponsible, inaccurate and intended to bring chaos. The first article claimed that US sources had verified Saudi Arabia’s intention to allow Israeli planes to use their territory for an attack on Iran. The government of Saudi Arabia issued a strong denial in hours. Today’s Israeli press release, carried as a news article by the London Times is far more sinister but also leaves a trail. We are putting the London Times in for the Yellow Journalism Award of the Week, something usually reserved for Fox News.

Gaza: Time to end, not 'ease' the siege

The Israeli argument that the siege is necessary to undermine the Hamas movement, which has been in control of the Strip for three years this week, has been proven invalid.

Israel knows that it can secure an end to rocket attacks from Gaza through a mediated truce, such as the one brokered by Egypt in 2008. When Israel broke that truce - leading to a response from Hamas - it was as though it wanted an excuse to unleash its superior military arsenal on the Strip.

Israel's very insistence that it has the right to control the Gaza Strip and to use military power against Palestinians must not be accepted or even accommodated by the international community.

Her knees have been replaced with titanium, and a metal plate supports her back. She's used to setting off alarms.

But she's not used to the sort of screening she experienced April 5 when a Transportation Security Administration worker motioned Phillips to the side for a secondary screening. Phillips says the screener's metal-detecting wand went north of the retirees knees and brushed against her crotch.

Phillips jumped, aghast.

And when she asked for a different female screener, she says, a standoff led to her being detained for nearly two hours - until a Philadelphia police sergeant sent her on her way.

Red Cross: Gaza blockade illegal

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has described Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip as a violation of the Geneva Conventions and called on the Israeli government to lift it.

In a statement released on Monday, the organisation called the blockade "collective punishment", a crime under international law. It described Gaza as a territory plagued by frequent power cuts, a ruined economy, and a collapsed health care system.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Great that the Red Cross appears to have managed a magnificent grasp of the obvious.

The question is, what is the Red Cross actually going to do to break the siege?!?

Int’l law expert Aral: Israel not as untouchable as before

“Israel now has committed new crimes and is not as untouchable as before. Almost all countries in the word have been critical of its latest attack in one way or another,” he told Today’s Zaman for Monday Talk regarding Israel’s attack on May 31 which killed nine people and wounded several dozen on an aid ship carrying activists from more than 30 countries.

Israel claims that it acted in self-defense while attacking the ship, which was in international waters and carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

The Turkish government said that it will implement several measures against Israel and will seek options to have the Israeli officials responsible for the tragedy tried in court.

PROPAGANDA ALERT - Iran 'definitely' building nuclear weapon

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here is a good lesson in media propaganda. First, the story headline...

"Iran 'definitely' building nuclear weapon "

Note the use of the word 'definitely'.

Now, the opening paragraph of the body of the story.

Due to concern over potentially harmful international political implications, U.S. officials will only say they "believe" Iran is engaged in a clandestine program that may yield a nuclear weapon.

Most readers will glance at the headline only and come away convinced that Iran is 'definitely' building a nuclear weapon even though the story is pure conjecture from the usual anonymous sources from the "US Ally", meaning Israel.

Hawaii elections clerk hits YouTube - HOAX ALERT

Webmaster's Commentary:

I was being flooded with this nonsense over the last couple weeks. The logic behind my position remains unchanged. If there were anything to this birth certificate nonsense, both Hilary Clinton and John McCain would have used it to secure their victories.

That being said, the fact that this latest story emerged just as Orly Taitz was campaigning in California was grounds for suspicion, since Orly's sole claim to fame was the birther movement.

So now OpEdNews comes out with a story exposing the fact that the so-called expert from Hawaii is linked to known white supremacist groups and has a past history of dubious accuracy and credibility. So everyone who ran this story as unquestioned news fell into a trap, including WND. There "well is poisoned" and any further criticisms of Obama, however legitimate, can be dismissed as racist smear attacks.

Russia deploys hundreds of extra soldiers to Kyrgyz military base

Russia has deployed hundreds more soldiers to protect its military base in Kyrgyzstan, in the wake of fresh unrest that had left almost 100 people dead in the Central Asian country as of Sunday.

Three Ilyushin Il-96 military planes with a battalion of Russian paratroopers on board have landed at the base in Kant, the Interfax news agency reported. A Russian battalion typically ranges from 350 to 800 soldiers, depending on the situation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is an interesting development, in light of the fact that Russia had previously declared it was sending no troops to Kyrgyzstan to quell the rioting.

As reported last Saturday, 12 June, at

"Otunbayeva asked Russia early Saturday to send in troops, but the Kremlin said it would not meddle into what it described as Kyrgyzstan's internal conflict.

"It's a domestic conflict, and Russia now doesn't see conditions for taking part in its settlement," Kremlin spokeswoman Natalya Timakova said in Moscow. She added that Russia will discuss with other members of a security pact of ex-Soviet nations about the possibility of sending a joint peacekeeping force to Kyrgyzstan.

Timakova said Russia would send a plane to Kyrgyzstan to deliver humanitarian supplies and help evacuate victims of the violence."

One has to wonder why Russia would believe that its base in Kyrgyzstan would come under any kind of attack.

Obama Issues Executive Order Mandating “Lifestyle Behavior Modification”

You will "change" to my liking! Claiming the "authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America," President Obama has truly gone off the deep end this time in his most atrocious attempt to date to control every aspect of Americans? lives.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Okay, so let's sum up here.

1. BP blows up a well and because the US Government has been asleep at the switch on safety and regulation, this results in the worst environmental disaster possibly in all history.

2. Israel attacks an aid fleet in international waters, hijacking one US-flagged ship, kidnapping 12 Americans and gunning down a boy from New York.

3. Obama's response to both of the above is to declare that the American taxpayers must further reduce our standard of living so that we may pay added taxes.

Netanyahu: Gaza flotilla probe will show the world Israel acted lawfully

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the start of Monday's cabinet meeting that the main goal of the Gaza flotilla probe is to prove to the world that the Israel Navy operation on the Gaza-bound aid ship was appropriate and met international standards.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One never ceases to be amazed at Netanyahu's Orwellian grasp of geopolitical language.

Preventing nutrition from getting Gazan kids to the point where 14% of Gaza's kids are malnourished is Israel's "great humanitarian aid" to them.

Preventing infants from getting out of Gaza for desperately needed medical care is denied for "security reasons".

And the slaughter of unarmed civilians in international waters is "self defense".

Unflipping believable; and trust me, Mr. Prime Minister, the world is not going to believe it either, particularly with the videos and eye-witness accounts from the survivors which have surfaced.

The Crude Truth

Two weeks ago the president and his advisors realized that they were headed for the rocks. The Great Reconciler of 2008 was being reclassified in the popular mind as the Wimp of the Year in 2010. The White House had allowed BP’s CEO, Tony Hayward, to grab headlines day after day with absurdly lowball estimates of how much oil was gushing out into the Gulf.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Pussying out when Israel attacked Americans in international waters did not help either!
