Obama to bypass Congress with carbon taxes?

In his nationally televised press conference, President Obama indicated that carbon taxes may be imposed on U.S. citizens through a move designed to bypass Congress altogether, Jerome Corsi’s Red Alert reports.

Knowing that the chances of getting cap-and-trade legislation through a Republican-controlled House and a Senate with a larger, more conservative Republican minority will be almost impossible, Obama suggested a backdoor route through the Environmental Protection Agency may be a way to accomplish the goal without requiring new legislation.

18 Iconic American Products That America Doesn't Make Anymore

Meanwhile, plenty of beer is still made here, but many of America’s most-iconic beer brands, including Miller, Coors, and Budweiser, are owned by foreign companies. In 2008, Anheuser-Busch, the St. Louis-based company that has a nearly 50 percent market share in the U.S., was sold to InBev, a Belgium-based conglomerate run by Brazilian executives.

Bank of America Edges Closer to Tipping Point: Jonathan Weil

Judging by its shrinking stock price, though, investors are acting as if Bank of America is near a tipping point. Its market capitalization stands at $115.6 billion, or 54 percent of book value. That’s the second-lowest price-to-book ratio among the 24 companies in the KBW Bank Index, and well below the 76 percent ratio the company was at in October 2008 when it landed its first round of TARP dough. Put another way, the market is saying there’s a $96.8 billion hole in Bank of America’s balance sheet.

When I asked Jerry Dubrowski, a Bank of America spokesman, about the disparity, he said: “I’m not going to comment on the book value and the stock price.”

Olbermann back Tuesday

After a weekend of speculation, Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC, has announced Keith Olbermann’s fate:

After several days of deliberation and discussion, I have determined that suspending Keith through and including Monday night's program is an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy. We look forward to having him back on the air Tuesday night.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Phil probably realized that after all the cash the owners of MSNBC handed out during the last campaign, punishing Keith for a few thousand handed to Democrats as a private citizen looked bad. And it did. I am happy Kieth is back on the air. I probably won't watch the show, but I'm glad he won on principle.

Of course, this could all have been a pathetic publicity stunt to boost MSNBC's and Keith's abysmal ratings,. too! :)

NOAA official asks EINnews to withdraw story concerning gulf seafood safety

A U.S. government spokesperson reacted sharply today to an EIN news story questioning the safety of gulf seafood, saying "the veracity of the federal government seafood safety protocol or results are not in question by any qualified scientist." EINNEWS said it stands by its story.

The official, Christine Patrick, the lead public affairs officer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, demanded that EINNEWS withdraw its story.

NOAA and the Federal Food and Drug Administration earlier this week issued a joint statement giving the "all clear" to the consumption of Gulf of Mexico seafood.

The agencies based their approval on what they said were tests on 1,735 tissue samples including more than half of those collected to reopen Gulf of Mexico federal waters.

I awake this morning in much the same state as I did the morning after June 8, 1967, the day Israel attacked my ship USS LIBERTY and killed 34 of my fellow crewmates–tense and jittery.

Rather, its just my sixth-sense, kept on a hair-trigger as a result of the 2 hour attack on my ship that almost killed me and destroyed the world. As Iraq’s violence ebbed, it seemed that the country’s tea-sipping, hookah-smoking revelers had reclaimed the evening hours, casting off the siege mentality of the war’s worst days as they repopulated nightclubs, speakeasies and public parks.

Then came a recent barrage of attacks that clawed apart scenes of Iraq’s reawakened nightlife. Insurgents blew up restaurants and cafes, public squares and shopping stalls, in what felt to many Iraqis like a deliberate attempt to drive them back behind their front gates after the sun sets.

Little-Known 9/11 Truth Organization Strikes Gold in Court Action Against NIST, Unearths Striking Video/Photo WTC Evidence

Uncovering the data NIST used in its WTC investigations proved to be a little more difficult. The Center filed a FOIA Request with NIST on January 26, 2009, seeking disclosure of “all of the photographs and videos collected, reviewed, cited or in any other way used by NIST during its investigation of the World Trade Center building collapses.” NIST initially ignored this request, and for months dismissed attempts by the Center to gain acknowledgment of its receipt. Undeterred, Gourley filed a lawsuit on May 28, 2009 to get the data released. Since then, NIST has been periodically turning over images and video from its archives. So far, the Center has received over 300 DVDs and several external hard disk drives related to the NIST Reports – more than three terabytes of data – and NIST has indicated that additional records will be released in the future.

When Single Moms Are Fined $1.5M, It's Time To Take A New Look At Copyright Protection In The Digital Age

First of all, it infuriates me that the federal government is working as private cops for the RIAA. Think about how they pushed through the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and forced the music and computer industries to use copy protection.

It also maddens me because the Founders only allowed ten year copyrights, after which the rights were turned over to the general public, to benefit from the work.

It's time to come up with a saner version of digital copyright, because this is crazy and wrong:

Obama: Myanmar elections 'neither free nor fair'

The first elections in military-ruled Myanmar in 20 years were "neither free nor fair," President Barack Obama said Sunday.

Troubling Global Volcanic Activity on the Rise

Here’s why volcano watchers around the world are on high alert.

This past week, in Indonesia, after a tsunami killed several hundred people, Mount Merapi rumbled to life forcing thousands to flee back to evacuation centers as 38 lava avalanches occurred with pyroclastic flows down the south and west slopes running outward for seven kilometers. They incinerate everything in their path.

In August, a volcano on Sumatra erupted for the first time in 400 years.

There is a “Ring of Fire” that stretches approximately 25,000 miles in a horseshoe from eastern Asia to the western shores of North and South America. It has 452 volcanoes of which 75% are the world’s most active or dormant.

On August 25, Italy’s Etna volcano and Columbia’s Galeros volcano both erupted.

Barak: Iran wants to deceive world

Defense Minister Ehud Barak expressed little optimism on Saturday about a proposed round of talks between global powers and Iran, which is under pressure over its nuclear ambitions.

"Based on experience and looking at the example which they (the Iranians) are using, which is probably the North Korean example, you can easily see ... the objective is to defy, deceive and deter the whole world," he said.

"Iran is a major, major threat to any conceivable world order. It's clear to all of us that they're determined to reach military nuclear capability," Barak said during a panel discussion at the forum.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Israeli Defense Minister Barak: forgive me, sir, but isn't this precisely what Israel did with its own nuclear arms program?!?

Let's take a look at something to which you appear to be pathologically allergic: the facts of the matter here.

1. As a signatory to the NNPT, all of Iran's nuclear work is done under the watchful eye of the IAEA, through their inspection process.

2. To date, no nuclear material has been found to have gone missing, and the Iranians are enriching their uranium to the 20% necessary for the creating of medical isotopes. (Israel refuses to sign the NNPT, refuses to allow IAEA inspections, and has a large cache of nuclear weapons. Also, any financial or military aid given to Israel by the US since the passage of the Symington Amendment is illegal.)

3. Weapons degree enrichment takes over 95% enrichment.

4. To date, the most current IAEA reports do not indicate any work on a weapons program.

5. The Iranian leadership is many things, but it is not stupid: they have not begun a war in over 200 years.

6. They understand that any attack of any kind against Israel would result in Iran being turned into green glass by Israeli and US firepower.

7. You want these upcoming talks to either never happen, or to fail abysmally, with Iran rejecting any offer put on the table.

8. You are hoping that such a failure will result in a US-led attack against Iran. And yet again, it will be American kids who will die, bleed, and be maimed for life to "neutralize" another one of your "existential enemies) in the region (which includes pretty much all your neighbors). This will make every US military person in the region a sitting duck for a counter-attack.

9. Such an attack may well see China and Russia, both nuclear-armed countries, join the conflict on the side of Iran.

10. The only kind of attack the US could successfully mount would be a "blitzkrieg", because the US has offshored its manufacturing to the point where we could not sustain an extended, drawn-out conflict.

Personally, I don't think there should be a government issued 'permission' (licence) to drive unless someone has shown a pattern of incompetence, then they need to be tested and licensed. If the pattern continues, then that licence can be revoked and they can be forbidden to drive. I think that's a much fairer system, but of course it's not about fairness... it's about collecting money for the bureaucracy!

Quantitative Easing: Elixir or Poison?

Market Ticker's Karl Denninger calls QE "the largest tax ever imposed on the American people in the history of the nation. It is more than fourteen times the Bush tax cuts....Goldman Sachs believes that Bernanke will impose a total tax through (QE) of more than four trillion dollars over the next two years, or more than fifty-seven times the Bush tax cuts."

How so? Because credit created is going into asset markets (stocks, bonds, commodities, etc.), not the economy. QE I's tax, in fact, diluted stimulus funds, an offsetting tax "directly into the bankers' pockets" for speculation, big salaries and bonuses.

World Geopolitics and The Battle for the Mediterranean

One should ask, if the objectives behind this process were benign, why all the secrecy and why the deceit? Why the gradual brinkmanship of the project over time? Most importantly, why the use of threats, such as in the cases of Libya and Syria? Or military means, using violence and murder, such as in the cases of the Palestinian Territories and Lebanon, to bring about the materialization of the process?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Seems like we're seeing a growing pattern of this kind of behavior from government leadership all over the world; finding ways to make life more miserable for their working people.

But one has to wonder; just how long will those working people "play the game" before the fury of their circumstances erupts into something palpable, and what form will that fury take?!?

One FLU Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

In the UK the HPA collects lab data of positive flu test results. In 2009 there were approximately 3000 influenza A test results and approximately 300 influenza B tests. There were about 105,000 cases of influenza like illnesses. So in comparison flu only made up 3% of flu like illnesses in the UK.
To summarize you are far more likely to catch a flu like illness rather than the flu, 97% of all ILI are not flu! Out of those 3300 who caught flu last year how many died? We don’t know because those details weren’t published in the HPA report. But the mortality rate of seasonal flu is 1% so can we assume 33 people died? So are we getting vaccines to prevent ourselves being one of the 33? Wow that’s playing it safe!

The Fed and the Debased “Imperial Dollar”: Inflation, Stagnation and Higher Interest Rates Ahead

Indeed, is it likely that countries which see their currencies being revalued by the Fed will remain passive? The Fed is implicitly making the bet that these countries will not retaliate, and that the international dollar-based currency system will remain intact. But for how long? Regular citizens have big security role: Napolitano

Regular citizens around the world need to realize they can play a big role in thwarting terrorist attacks, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Saturday.

"They will be the ones that notice something in the neighborhood, see something on the street," she told a panel at an international forum hosted by the German Marshall Fund public policy group.

"Maybe somebody will pass along a quiet message about 'Hey, these young people have gone over to Somalia. We don't know what they're doing, but now they're back and you may need to know about that,'"

Webmaster's Commentary:

Webmaster's Commentary:

What these wars have been, essentially, are publicly funded wars for ultimate potential private profit: it is very possible these soldiers saw that, and felt very angry and betrayed that their lives had been put on the line not to defend America, or enhance its security, but for private profit.

In Iraq, it was supposed to be about the oil, and we can see how well that went: no American company won any development or exploration rights when these bids were tendered.

In Afghanistan, it was about installing the pipelines with which to control Eurasian oil, once the Afghanis were suitably "pacified" (read: blown to bloody bits).

Well, almost one decade on that hasn't happened. The only people "winning" the war in Afghanistan are the military contractors, providing hired mercenaries, logistics, and supplies, and the drug lords, who are having a field day!

Secret documents reveal that government-funded experts were warned nearly 30 years ago that tranquillisers that were later prescribed to millions of people could cause brain damage.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) agreed in 1982 that there should be large-scale studies to examine the long-term impact of benzodiazepines after research by a leading psychiatrist showed brain shrinkage in some patients similar to the effects of long-term alcohol abuse.

However, no such work was ever carried out into the effects of drugs such as Valium, Mogadon and Librium – and doctors went on prescribing them to patients for anxiety, stress, insomnia and muscle spasms.

I noticed some years ago that when I ate fast food I was hungry again shortly after. This was not the case when I ate real food. It did not matter how much fast food I ate, I was always hungry again a short time later. It did not contain the special nutrition of real food. Similarly, trivial entertainments, superficial books that advertise deeper understandings and all of the attractions that purport to be of the deeper ocean of infinite being, are nothing more than shallow pools that lead to greater dissatisfaction and an empty existence. Everyone learns this but most do not register the import that it is evidence of. Everything is evidence of something so, wiser minds can associate everything they contact with the deeper ocean, because all water is common to itself.

U.S. Won't Know Pace Of Afghan Drawdown For Months

The pace of a planned U.S. drawdown from Afghanistan due to start next July may not be entirely decided until shortly before it begins, Defense Secretary Robert Gates suggested Sunday.

Gains by opposition Republicans in congressional elections last week have raised questions about possible push-back on President Barack Obama's contested policy of starting to withdraw from the nine-year-old war in mid-2011.

Obama's Democrats strongly support setting a date to start withdrawing from the unpopular conflict but Republicans, who may now have a stronger say in policy, largely oppose it and may try to minimize any withdrawal.

Translation: the US is never leaving Afghanistan!

Fires Have Never Caused Skyscrapers to Collapse

Excepting the three 9-11 collapses, no fire, however severe, has ever caused a steel-framed high-rise building to collapse. Following are examples of high-rise fires that were far more severe than those in WTC 1 and 2, and Building 7. In these precedents, the fires consumed multiple floors, produced extensive window breakage, exhibited large areas of emergent flames, and went on for several hours. The fires in the WTC towers did none of these things.

Workers, citizens rally against G-20 in SKorea

Thousands of people chanted anti-globalization slogans in South Korea's capital Sunday to protest this week's Group of 20 summit. Part of the crowd attempted to march down nearby streets but were stopped by riot police, who fired pepper spray.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Globalism is what turned a US economic fraud into a planetary catastrophe. More globalism is not going to fix it. That is like suggesting that we back the Titanic up a bit and whack that iceberg on the other side to see if that stop the leaks!

Israeli police flatten mosque, say built illegally

Israeli police say they demolished an illegally built mosque in the southern Bedouin city of Rahat, touching off rock-throwing protests by residents.

Mosque activist Yousef Abu-Jama said residents built the structure illegally because Israeli authorities would take too long to issue approval.

U.S. Banks Failing At Fastest Pace In 2 Decades

Regulators shut down four more banks Friday, bringing the 2010 total to 143, topping the 140 shuttered last year and the most in a year since the savings-and-loan crisis two decades ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One cannot possibly look at numbers like these, and utter the phrase "economic recovery" with a straight face.

Israel gave settlers land deals in east Jerusalem

The Israeli government sold or leased property in Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem to Israeli settlers at exceptionally low prices, helping them cement a Jewish presence there, court documents published on Sunday show.

The documents are the first to show how easily settlers were able to put down stakes in these areas with the help of successive Israeli governments. In one case, a 3,660-square-foot building in east Jerusalem's walled Old City was sold in October 2006 for $190,000 -- a fraction of its market price.

Results of Fed Stimulus Could Be 'Horrendous'

In a separate interview on public broadcaster ARD, Schäuble said that the move by Fed Chair Ben Bernanke would "create additional problems for the world." He promised to bring up the issue in talks with the US and said that, by following such a monetary path, the US was violating a pledge that all industrialized countries agreed to at the last G-20 summit in Toronto in June.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This QE2 program is going to be great for the bankers, who - by the way - are already buying foreign assets with this money - but absolutely lousy for working people.

Many businesses have cut hours and benefits, and/or reduced pay for their employees just to stay afloat. People with jobs are desperately trying to hang on to what they have.

As Bernake is not an idiot, one has to imagine that this has been the design objective of these economic policies all along: to reduce American workers' wages to make American corporations more competitive globally.

The problem is, these employees have no way to make up the shortfall between the cut in pay and benefits, relative to what they have to spend to stay alive; consequently, more and more families will be driven to the edge of poverty and desperation.

Even Greenspan Admits that Moral Hazard and Fraud are the Main Problems

Even Alan Greenspan is confirming what William Black, James Galbraith, Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof and many other economists and financial experts have been saying for a long time: the economy cannot recover if fraud is not prosecuted and if the big banks know that government will bail them out every time they get in trouble.

Banks spying on your bills, rent payments, paychecks: report

Iraqi prisoners were abused at 'UK's Abu Ghraib', court hears

Evidence of the alleged systematic and brutal mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners at a secret British military interrogation centre that is being described as "the UK's Abu Ghraib" emerged yesterday during high court proceedings brought by more than 200 former inmates.

The court was told there was evidence that detainees were starved, deprived of sleep, subjected to sensory deprivation and threatened with execution at the shadowy facilities near Basra operated by the Joint Forces Interrogation Team, or JFIT.

It also received allegations that JFIT's prisoners were beaten, forced to kneel in stressful positions for up to 30 hours at a time, and that some were subjected to electric shocks. Some of the prisoners say that they were subject to sexual humiliation by women soldiers, while others allege that they were held for days in cells as small as one metre square.

WMR: U.S. ratchets up Contra War II against Nicaragua

On November 1, Costa Rica claimed that Nicaraguan troops had taken up position on Calero island in the San Juan River and which is claimed by both countries. Nicaragua claims that its troops are in the area to control drug trafficking from Costa Rica, which WMR previously reported involved Costa Rican police and intelligence personnel. In a statement published by The Washington Post, Nicaraguan Army chief of staff General Julio Aviles confirmed WMR’s previous report stating the drug trafficking from Costa Rica is controlled by an ex-patriate Nicaraguan family operating from San Jose, the Costa Rican capital.

WMR has also learned that the paramilitary operatives operating out of Costa Rica, including CIA and Mossad agents, are now looking at extending their destabilization operations into El Salvador, now governed by the leftist Farabundo Marti Liberation Front government of President Mauricio Funes, an ally of Ortega in Nicaragua. The tactic being used by the Chinchilla-Lieberman regime in San Jose is the same as that being used against Nicaragua: flood El Salvador with cocaine to increase drug gang warfare and instability.

Senate Document No. 23, Jan. 24, 1939: National Economy and the Banking System of the United States: A Few Quotations of Notable Leaders

Benjamin Franklin, on being asked in Great Britain how he accounted for the prosperous condition of the Colonies, said:

That is simple. It is only because in the Colonies we issue our own money. It is called colonial scrip, and we issue it in the proper proportion to the demand of trade and industry.

It was not very long until this information was brought to the Rothschilds' bank, and they saw that here was a nation that was ready to be exploited; here was a nation that had been setting up an example that they could issue their own money in place of the money coming through the banks. So the Rothschild Bank caused a bill to be introduced in the English Parliament which provided that no colony of England could issue their own money. They had to use English money. Consequently the Colonies were compelled to discard their scrip and mortgage themselves to the Bank of England in order to get money. For the first time in the history of the United States our money began to be based on debt.

Benjamin Franklin stated that in 1 year from that date the streets of the Colonies were filled with the unemployed, because when England exchanged with them, she gave the Colonies only half as many units of payment in borrowed money from the Rothschild Bank as they had in scrip. In other words, their circulating medium was reduced 50 percent, and everyone became unemployed. The poor houses became filled, according to Benjamin Franklin's own statement. In his own language:

The colonies would gladly have borne the little tax on tea and other matters had it not been that Englad took away from the Colonies their money, which created unemployment and dissatisfaction.

U.S. Banks Failing At Fastest Pace In 2 Decades

WASHINGTON -- Regulators shut down four more banks Friday, bringing the 2010 total to 143, topping the 140 shuttered last year and the most in a year since the savings-and-loan crisis two decades ago.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took over K Bank, based in Randallstown, Maryland, with $538.3 million in assets, and Pierce Commercial Bank, based in Tacoma, Washington, with $221.1 million in assets. The FDIC also seized two California banks: Western Commercial Bank in Woodland Hills, with $98.6 million in assets, and First Vietnamese American Bank in Westminster, with assets of $48 million.

Twenty-five banks failed in 2008, the year the financial crisis struck with force; only three succumbed in 2007.

The growing bank failures have sapped billions of dollars out of the FDIC's deposit insurance fund. It fell into the red last year, and its deficit stood at $15.2 billion as of June 30.

The FDIC expects the cost of resolving failed banks to total around $52 billion from 2010 through 2014.

UK Unemployed Told: Do Four Weeks of Unpaid Work or Lose Unemployment Benefits

The unemployed will be ordered to do periods of compulsory full-time work in the community or be stripped of their benefits under controversial American-style plans to slash the number of people without jobs.

The proposals, in a white paper on welfare reform to be unveiled this week, are part of a radical government agenda aimed at cutting the £190bn-a-year welfare bill and breaking what the coalition now calls the "habit of worklessness".

In return, where advisers believe a jobseeker would benefit from experiencing the "habits and routines" of working life, an unemployed person will be told to take up "mandatory work activity" of at least 30 hours a week for a four-week period. If they refuse or fail to complete the programme their jobseeker's allowance payments, currently £50.95 a week for those under 25 and £64.30 for those over 25, could be stopped for at least three months.

Unemployment payouts push California deeper into debt

Reporting from Sacramento — California's fund for paying unemployment insurance is broke.

With one in every eight workers out of a job, the state is borrowing billions of dollars from the federal government to pay benefits at the rate of $40 million a day.

Interest on that debt will soon start piling up, forcing the state to come up with a $362-million payment to Washington by the end of next September.

That's money that otherwise would go into the state's general fund, where it could be spent to hire new teachers, provide healthcare to children and beef up law enforcement.

California heads a list of 32 states that have been forced to borrow a total of $41 billion so far from the federal government to pay claims.

“Another spy disaster like Pollard, shoved under the rug too long due to pressure from the powerful Israeli lobby.”

What did America lose? 15 years of research and development? That doesn’t come close. Key components of the F-35, from stealth materials, flight and weapons systems, to tens of thousands of man-hours of systems programming are now “out there,” available to any potential rival, military or commercial. At best, it could be considered a $300 billion dollar bank robbery, by American standards, nothing new in today’s financial world.

Financial Fraud in Germany. The Wall Street Model Backfires

The earlier filing of fraud charges against Wall Street banking titan Goldman Sachs by the US Government Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was only the tip of a huge fraud iceberg. Now a US mortgage insurer has charged one of the most aggressive banks involved in the US subprime mortgage scam of fraud. The bank is none other than Deutsche Bank. This case is also likely to be just the “tip of a very big iceberg.”

Israeli soldiers convicted of using boys as 'human shields'

Two Israeli soldiers were convicted today by the southern command military court of using human shields in the winter of 2008 and 2009 during Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip, Haaretz reported.

The conviction includes ordering an 11-year-old Palestinian to search bags believed to be booby trapped in January 2009. The use of human shields in searches and pursuits is illegal. It is the first time soldiers have been convicted of using human shields, or what has been called the Israel Defense Forces "neighbor procedure."

After a few years of relative silence, our venerable old friend Jeff Blankfort gave a few interviews this being the longest. Though it is being presented as a sort of anti-Chomsky polemics, one may disregard this part and still find much of importance and relevance. This is damning and grim, but not grim enough.

Rep. Ron Paul expected to lead House in Federal Reserve oversight

Republican Representative Ron Paul on Thursday said he will push to examine the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions if he takes control of the congressional subcommittee that oversees the central bank as expected in January.

The people of Yemen simply don’t believe in Al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden, and for good reason. When Abdullah al-Faqih, professor of political science at Sana University told the New York Times, “We cannot differentiate between what is propaganda and what is real…Some of what looks like Al Qaeda is really terror as a business.”

With early news stories being continually contradicted, bombs that weren’t really bombs heading out on flights that never existed, carrying packages for companies that don’t service Yemen, all heading for Chicago synagogues, part of the wildest “persecution complex” of all time, the whole “Al Qaeda/Yemen” thing has been little more than a “borscht belt” comedy act.
