Russia 'schizophrenic' on Iran: US defense chief

Russia appears to have a "schizophrenic" approach to Iran, viewing Tehran as a security threat while pursuing commercial deals with the country, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday.

Gates told senators Russia has for years seen Iran as a worrisome regional power.

When he met with then-president Vladimir Putin three years ago in Moscow, the Russian leader "told me that he considered Iran Russia's greatest national security threat," Gates said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Forgive me, but has SecDef Gates gone barking mad?!?!?

First, it is Russia which is providing the technical support to the construction of the power plant in Bushehr.

If Russia really believed that Iran was such a red-hot security issue, why did they offer to assist Iran with its nuclear facility in the first place?!?

John McCain has a new article in The New Republic -- which is exactly where it should be -- calling for regime change in Iran. “And so you can imagine my dismay, Mr. Speaker, with the recent aggressive action by Turkey toward our most cherished ally, Israel. "

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Aggressive Action, Mr. Pence? Cookies? Candy? Potato chips?

Please remember that Japan was a "cherished ally" in early 1941. The US was selling the Japanese steel, railroads, weaponry; a large and vast trade that had been continuing since the days of Commodore Perry.

Yet when Japan decided that Americans were a threat to their illegal occupation of China and attacked Pearl Harbor, no Americans stood up to defend Japan's attack just because from Japan;s point of view, America might inter4fere with their illegal occupation of China. Nobody would have dared do so, because they would right have been denounced as a traitor!

Can you imagine President Roosevelt abandoning his "Day of Infamy" speech to rush over to the League of Nations and explain that it was a perfectly permissible for Japan to attack and kill Americans, because after all, Japan thought we might interfere with their illegal occupation of China?

Mr. Pence you are a traitor and unfit for office, as anyone who is more worried about those who attacked Americans in international waters than the Americans themselves is unfit for office.

No government can serve two masters, and a government that serves Israel cannot serve the American people. A friend to Israel is no friend of America.

America needs leaders who will put America first, second, and third.

Clearly, that is requirement of office you fail to meet.

Either stand with America, Congressman, or stand alone.

Please feel free to copy and paraphrase this comment everywhere a so-called American politician dares defend those who attacked Americans in international waters.

My question for J.J. Goldberg

The so-called “peace process” that you reference roughly started in 1991, with the Madrid Conference, and we’re now in the year 2010. That’s about 20 years. It appears that the “peace process” has failed and that negotiations have led to nowhere, and that was due to the Israeli refusal to accept a viable two-state solution. I said that both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority are willing to accept a Palestinian state in only 22% of historic Palestine. Israel, it seems, wants it all.

BP Aware Of Cracks In Oil Well Two Months Before Explosion

BP was aware of cracks appearing in the Macondo well as far back as February, right around the time Goldman Sachs and BP Chairman Tony Hayward were busy dumping their stocks in the company on the eve of the explosion that led to the oil spill, according to information uncovered by congressional investigators.

Screening of 'one-sided' Gaza flotilla film at UN spurs Israeli complaint

Israel on Thursday issued an official complaint against the president of the United Nations Correspondents Association for deliberately barring Israel from responding to the public screening of a documentary film on the events of the recent Gaza-bound aid flotilla, made by one of the activists.

The president of the UN Correspondents Association, Giampaolo Pioli, organized an event several days ago during which a documentary film by one of the Mavi Marmara activists was screened. In the invitation sent to all the foreign correspondents in New York Pioli wrote that he was inviting them to the debut of a film depicting the "Israeli attack on human rights activists."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Wow, does Israel ever get cranky when the truth about anything with which they are involved comes out, and they can't control the agenda!

This activist's film should be seen by every member of the UN.

New flotilla of Gaza aid planned

A coalition of pro-Palestinian groups has said it plans to send a second aid flotilla to Gaza, dismissing Israel's promise to ease its blockade as not bold enough and defying Israeli warnings against any new sea-based activist operation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The problem with Israel that despite the talk of easing the blockade, reports from Gaza is that nothing but a few token items such as mayonnaise are being let through. And any easing Israel does today can be revoked as soon as the eyes of the world turn away again. The fact is that Israel is on the defensive and has lost the initiative and now is the time for Israel to finally draw its borders and live within them as a modern civilized nation should. It is time for Palestine to have the same right to exist and to a state that Israel has. All other options are just delaying tactics.

G20 arrests protested

Activists plan to put up posters Thursday night in downtown London in solidarity with two men arrested for putting up G20 protest posters earlier this week.

The two men were arrested Tuesday night and held in police cells overnight. They face seven charges each of mischief for what police called “the negative message with content relating to the disruption and resistance to the G8 G20 on the posters.”

The posters were put up in the area of Dundas St. E., and around Egerton St. and Rectory St.. Environmentally friendly glue was used to put up the posters, but police said that gluing considered graffiti.

Strikes in China signal end to era of low-cost labour and cheap exports

The Chinese Communist party called on employers to raise salaries and improve training for workers today, as Toyota became the latest foreign firm to be hit by a wave of high-profile strikes.

According to labour activists, there have been numerous strikes in recent years, though few get reported in the media. Chang Kai, professor of labour relations and law at Renmin University, said the number had increased by 30% per year.

Their impact has grown as the "one-child" family planning policy starts to thin the bulge in the working-age population. This demographic change in the balance of labour supply and demand has added to improved worker organisation and greater activism at high-profile foreign firms.

Did the BP Oil Well Really Blow Out in February, Instead of April?

It took 10 days to plug the first cracks, according to reports BP filed with the Minerals Management Service that were later delivered to congressional investigators. “Once they realized they had oil down there, all the decisions they made were designed to get that oil at the lowest cost,” said Peter Galvin of the Center for Biological Diversity, which has been working with congressional investigators probing the disaster. “It’s been a doomed voyage from the beginning.”

More Than 90 Banks Miss TARP Payments

More than 90 U.S. banks and thrifts missed making a May 17 payment to the U.S. government under its main bank bailout program, signaling a rising number of lenders are struggling to meet their obligations.

The SNL Financial statistics show 91 banks missed their dividend payment under the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
The statistics, compiled by SNL Financial from U.S. Treasury data, showed 91 banks and thrifts skipped the May dividend payment under the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP. It was the first missed payment for 23 of the banks; for the others, it was at least their second miss.

The number of banks missing their TARP payments rose for the third straight quarter. In February, 74 banks deferred their payments; 55 deferred last November.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a really nasty harbinger of things to come for this country financially.

And apparently, neither President Obama nor Vice-President Biden got the memo on this. Because, as reported at:

"OBAMA, BIDEN DECLARE “RECOVERY SUMMER”: Vice President Biden today will kick off “Recovery Summer,” a six-week-long push designed to highlight the jobs accompanying a surge in stimulus-funded projects to improve highways, parks, drinking water and other public works"

This news about missed TARP payments, coupled with the spike in jobless claims, and Obama and Biden are proclaiming this the "Recovery Summer"?!?

Are they completely, utterly barking mad?!?!?

And the Gods Laughed

The ruling class, with the indispensable assistance of the media, including many blogs (both left and right), need only convince Americans of the "seriousness" of the danger those "Others" represent, and the next chapter in the neverending war will commence in earnest. Iran in particular is endlessly useful in this connection.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The drumbeats for a war against Iran are beating ever more loudly, particularly with the passage of sanctions against it, and formal sanctions probably coming from the EU either today or tomorrow.

With the two catastrophic wars going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, a third war will break and bankrupt this country, not to mention that should a war against Iran break out, China and Russia may well come to its aid militarily.

Eyewitness to the Israeli Assault on the Mavi Marmara

A soft-spoken teacher and former civilian engineer with the Canadian Department of Defense, Neish realized then that a video taken by an Arab TV cameraman in the midst of the Israeli assault on the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza of him flipping through a booklet had been transmitted before the Israelis blocked all electronic signals from the flotilla. The booklet had pictures and profiles of all the passengers, and he'd found it in the backpack of an Israeli Defense Force commando.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This man is telling the truth: the Israeli government is pathologically incapable of telling the truth, when the truth does any kind of disservice to its image or agenda.

This is why the whole notion of an Israeli inquiry into the flotilla massacre is so completely ludicrous.

Secret Prisons and Torture to Continue under Obama

According to a Los Angeles Times report, a senior U.S. official stated the Obama administration wants to detain and interrogate non-Afghan terrorism suspects captured in countries outside Afghanistan in a section of the Bagram prison, even after it turns the prison over to Afghan "control."

This is consistent with Obama’s record of continuing and expanding the national security state begun by the Bush regime. Bagram is one of the pre-eminent hellhole prisons currently run by the U.S. military. In many respects it is even worse than Gitmo, with torture and death being the result for many prisoners detained there.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported at on 21 May 2009 at:

Obama: 'We Do Not Torture'
Speaking today at the National Archives, President Obama said that the United States “went off course” in fighting terrorism during the Bush administration and that his new policies will “better protect” the country. Waterboarding and other harsh techniques, Obama argued, "did not advance our war and counter-terrorism efforts–they undermined them." He also defended his decision to close Guantanamo Bay. Rather than keep us safer, the prison at Guantanamo has weakened American national security," Obama said. "It is a rallying cry for our enemies. It sets back the willingness of our allies to work with us in fighting an enemy that operates in scores of countries. By any measure, the costs of keeping it open far exceed the complications involved in closing it.”

Looks like that was just another grand declaration on Bushbama's part that's been flushed down the toilet with the expansion of US overseen indefinite detention and torture at Bagram.

A Zionist State of Mind, A Dreamscape Of Ghosts

Although my mother fled Nazi Germany, as a child, on a Kindertransport, with a few family valuables sown into her clothing, and I was brought up on the myths and hagiography of the Zionist state, I, over time, came to recognize the folly of the whole colonialist enterprise — the folly of ethnic exclusion and expulsion, the inherent tragedy of nationalism based on the delusion of religious birthright. With much sorrow, I came to the sad realization that the dream of the State of Israel was based on European chauvinism and exceptionalism. This reckoning has been a difficult one for me to bear -- the hardest awakening of my adult life.

Webmaster's Commentary:

PMO announces plan to ease Gaza siege, but no such decision made

The Prime Minister's Office announced on Thursday that the security cabinet had agreed to relax Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip, but as it turns out, no binding decision was ever made during the cabinet meeting.

The Prime Minister's Office issued a press release in English following the meeting, which was also sent to foreign diplomats, was substantially different than the Hebrew announcement – according to the English text, a decision was made to ease the blockade, but in the Hebrew text there was no mention of any such decision.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is why the humanitarian aid flotillas must keep on coming, because the Israeli government will not lift the siege of Gaza of its own accord.

These statements were given merely to "buy time" to extend the siege, not to really ease or end the siege.

Embargoes and Blockades used as a Method of Warfare

Comparing the blockade of Gaza, by Israel, with that of Iraq, similarities are chillingly stark. Iraq, seventy percent reliant on imports from fertilizer to pharmaceuticals, building materials, to medical maintenance, was bombed back "to a pre-industrial age" in 1991. All wherewithal, for not alone rebuilding was denied, but foods, soft drinks, paper, books, newspapers, toiletries, pens, pencils, blackboards, toys, musical instruments, sheet music, trade and professional literature (including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet) ping pong balls. Items hardly "dual use" to morph in to weapons of mass destruction - or even play yard destruction.

Webmaster's Commentary:

According to UNICEF figures, 14% of Gazan Palestinian kids are malnourished.

This malnutrition is a direct result of Israel's siege of Gaza.

Jun 17 10:15

The War on Afghanistan is a Profit driven "Resource War".

The war on Afghanistan is a profit driven "resource war".

Under US and allied occupation, this mineral wealth is slated to be plundered, once the country has been pacified, by a handful of multinational mining conglomerates. According to Olga Borisova, writing in the months following the October 2001 invasion, the US-led "war on terrorism [will be transformed] into a colonial policy of influencing a fabulously wealthy country." (Borisova, op cit).

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, that's what our kids are fighting, getting maimed, and dying for in Afghanistan: the potential profits to be realized from oil, minerals, and drugs.

I wish the people in Congress, the White House and the Pentagon had the "male attributes" to tell every single grieving friend and family members of those killed or maimed in this war the truth: they don't, of course.

Canada: Israel's new defender

At a time when many countries are becoming more critical of Israel's policies, Canada seems to be moving in the opposite direction. A general reluctance to engage in open debate about the Palestinian issue is exacerbated by pro-Israel groups' efforts to shut down discussion and the federal government's unprecedented penchant for defending Israeli actions.

Since the beginning of 2010, the federal government has systematically cut funding to Arab-Canadian organisations and to UN relief works in Gaza. In March, the Ontario provincial legislature issued a unanimous condemnation of Israeli Apartheid Week, while the federal government considered introducing a similar motion.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to our friends up North: your government has been hijacked by a foreign government (read: Israel, just as has happened here in the US)and such a government will not put the interests of Canadians first, second, and third.

In fact, that country's agenda may be very harmful to the welfare of Canada's future.

I would suggest, then, that the next time Parliamentary elections are held, that you throw out every single Israeli-firster and replace them with someone who is not, just as we need to to in our upcoming elections here in the US.

This hijacking of our govenments - and putting a stop to it - is literally a matter of life and death for both countries.

Climate junk hard to dump

The past six months has seen a series of unprecedented setbacks for the cause of catastrophic man-made climate change: the collapse of the Kyoto process; the release of incriminating Climategate emails; the discovery of the shoddy standards of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); the mounting evidence that a job-creating green industrial revolution is a fantasy; and the growing suspicion by the public that it has been sold a bill of goods.

The British Royal Society recently released a statement that "Any public perception that the science is somehow fully settled is wholly incorrect," thus contradicting its own former president, and true believer, Lord May. And if the science isn't settled, there can hardly ever have been "consensus" on the issue.

'US conduct can elicit public revolt'

"If the US offered its citizens the right to freedom of information on world affairs, so that the American people could be fully informed of their leaders' support for Israeli atrocities as well as the crimes they have committed in Iraq and Afghanistan, the people would take effective measure against their statesmen," the Iranian president said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short memo to Iranian President Ahmedinejad: we, at least for the moment, do have a mechanism for taking "...effective measure" against the government. It's called an election.

And in the upcoming election in November, it is my most dearly held wish that every incumbent be thrown out of office, and that no "Israel-firsters" are voted in to replace them.

Israel has been, and continues to be, a millstone hanging on the necks of the US government, and Israel's agenda is not that which is best for the citizens of the US.

In fact, the agenda of the current Israeli leadership is to push the US as hard as it can toward a new war in the Middle East, again (as was the case with Iraq), to "neutralize" yet another one of Israel's existential threats in the region for it, that being Iran.

We need politicians who put America first, second, and third, period, end of discussion.

Considering how catastrophically badly things are going in Afghanistan and Iraq, a new war, with all its costs in blood and money, is absolutely the last thing this country needs right now.

Syria: Israel raid on Gaza flotilla raises risk of Mideast war

Syrian President Bashar Assad said Thursday that Israel is being run by a "pyromaniac government", warning that its raid on a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip had increased the risks of war in the region.

The Israeli commando attack on a flotilla in which nine pro-Palestinian Turkish activists were killed had "destroyed any chance for peace in the near future", Assad told the BBC in a television interview aired on Thursday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that Haaretz deliberately sidesteps the fact that one of the assassinated was an American of Turkish descent, Furkan Dogan, a 19 year old kid who should have had his whole life ahead of him.

Please, remember that name.

Unfortunately, Syrian President Assad is absolutely right in his characterization of the current Israeli leadership. And under Netanyahu's watch, a regional war - into which the US cannot help but be dragged in - will most likely spark a global war.

That war appears to be Netanyahu's agenda, and this is why every Israel-firster in the US Congress needs to be replaced as soon as humanly possible.

US lawmakers blast 'disgraceful' Turkey over Iran, Israel

US lawmakers slammed "disgraceful" Turkey on Wednesday over its ties to Iran and charged Ankara had the "blood" of nine Turks killed in an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship on its hands.

"There will be a cost if Turkey stays on its present heading of growing closer to Iran and more antagonistic to the state of Israel," warned Representative Mike Pence, the number three House Republican.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Please remember; Turkey's government, working in concert with that of Brazil, hammered out a nuclear materials swap with Iran, which was totally acceptable to Iran. Edrogan and Lula were behaving like true adults here in the world of geopolitics.

The US, Israel, and the UN ignored this totally, as though it had never happened.

Also, please remember: the Israeli Navy hijacked both a Turkish and American flagged vessel on the high seas, assassinating 9 unarmed humanitarian aid workers, including one American kid of Turkish descent.

And to all living in the congressional districts allegedly represented by Peter King, Mike Pence, and Eliot Engel: please throw these Israeli-firsters out of Congress at the next possible election.

These men are putting the interests of the dictates of a foreign government (read: Israel) ahead of yours and ahead of the needs of this Republic.

Military: Turkish troops cross into northern Iraq

Turkey sent hundreds of elite troops into northern Iraq on Wednesday to chase Kurdish guerrillas in an operation that could increase tensions within the region.

The soldiers killed four rebels escaping after a failed attack on a Turkish unit near the border, the Turkish military said. Israel fears Lebanese ‘fast’ flotilla

While the IDF continued Wednesday to track the Iranian ships en route to the Gaza Strip, the Navy was put on high alert amid fears that another flotilla would be launched from Lebanon, leaving – due to the short distance – little time to stop it.

“There is not a lot of time to stop fast ships that come from Lebanon,” an IDF officer explained, “Practically, it means that the Navy has to be on high alert around the clock.”

The Navy will likely first try to stop the ships by calling on them to stop at sea and far from the Gaza coast.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So apparently, having learned nothing from the flotilla massacre, the Israeli Navy is contemplating another hijacking of an unarmed aid ship in international waters?

Unflipping believable.

Israel Warns Lebanese, Iranian Activists against Sending Ships to Gaza

Israel has warned both Lebanese and Iranian organizers against sending aid ships to the besieged Gaza Strip.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said attempts by Lebanese and Iranian activists to break the blockade of Gaza "would be seen not just as a provocation and a breach of law, but as a hostile act because the ships and their cargo are from enemy states."

"They are coming from an enemy state and it means that, of course, the treatment is different, because legally they are different," Palmor warned.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Ahmedinejad has played this sending of aid to Gaza masterfully.

Because if Israel starts shooting an an unarmed humanitarian aid ship and starts a war, it will be remembered that Israel was the aggressor, not that Iran is accused of having a nuclear weapons program.

In that scenario, Iran has the moral high ground, period, end of discussion.

Gates Demands Congress OK War Funds by July 4

Speaking during a Senate Appropriation Defense Subcommittee hearing today, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates demanded that the $33 billion war funding bill be approved by Independence Day.

“We begin to have to do stupid things if the supplemental is not passed by July 4,” Gates warned. Exactly what these would be and how we would be able to tell the difference from ordinary Pentagon strategy was not clear.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This year, July 4th falls on a Sunday.

Were I a betting person, I would bet that Gates will have his money before that, possibly in the next week or so, as Congress typically takes a week or two of vacation after the 4th of July holiday.

One question to the supporters of a ‘One State Solution’ for Israel/Palestine…. How do you expect Israelis and Palestinians to get along in one state when Israelis cannot even get along with each other?

China's US govt debt holdings hit 2010 high: Treasury

China's holdings of US debt climbed to the highest level this year, the US Treasury said Tuesday even as Beijing stepped up attacks on the United States for its burgeoning debt.

The cash-rich Chinese government raised its US Treasury bond holdings to 900.2 billion dollars in April, its highest level since November 2009, while posting the second consecutive monthly rise, according to a report on international capital flows.

China, the world's largest holder of foreign-exchange reserves, has been constantly criticizing Washington for its snowballing debt levels, fearing that Beijing's investment in US government bonds could turn sour if a debt crisis overwhelms America.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, due to its staggering debtload, the US government could quite soon find itself in a state of collapse; the Chinese government, with its huge foreign exchange reserves invested in US treasuries, has every reason to be concerned.

Top Ten Myths about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The fact that this term is used exclusively with regard to Israel is instructive as to its legitimacy, as is the fact that the demand is placed upon Palestinians to recognize Israel’s “right to exist”, while no similar demand is placed upon Israelis to recognize the “right to exist” of a Palestinian state.

Nations don’t have rights, people do. The proper framework for discussion is within that of the right of all peoples to self-determination. Seen in this, the proper framework, it is an elementary observation that it is not the Arabs which have denied Jews that right, but the Jews which have denied that right to the Arabs. The terminology of Israel’s “right to exist” is constantly employed to obfuscate that fact.

Mexico Launching Global PR Campaign To Erase Drug War Image

Mexican President Felipe Calderon is launching a global public relations campaign to try to improve his country's image and neutralise coverage of the violent drug war scaring away tourists and foreign investors.

Calderon declared all-out war on drug cartels on taking office in late 2006, sending thousands of troops and federal police across Mexico to take on the heavily armed gangs running a multibillion dollar business.

Calderon, a strong-willed conservative, says he is turning to private advertising firms to launch an international image improvement campaign to show the world another, less violent side of Mexico, a country that depends on some 20 million tourists a year to boost its public finances.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A grandmother has been jailed for five years for possessing a "family heirloom" World War II pistol.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As a side note, since Great Britain passed their draconian guns laws and started locking people up for keeping antiques, crime in Great Britain has actually increased dramatically (which is consistent with the results of gun bans everywhere). But Britain has kept their gun ban in place on the excuse that the Brits can be told they are much safer with the gun ban in place.

Patience is urged in Afghanistan

Senior Pentagon officials urged patience Wednesday as U.S. troops begin operations to stabilize the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, and Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in the Mideast, returned to Capitol Hill to offer a full-throated endorsement of President Obama's order to pull out of Afghanistan starting next summer

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Admiral Mullen and President Obama: the American people have absolutely lost their patience this immoral and illegal war.

We have collectively experienced that moment of clarity where we understand fully that the US is not at all involved in an alleged "war on terror"; we are involved in a war against people who are either cursed by living over resources the US government considers theirs, or on transit routes to and from resources the US government considers theirs, as is the case in Afghanistan.

I would like to point out that, nearly 9 years on, the US military is no closer to "pacifying" Afghanistan to the point where the oil pipelines can be installed with which to control Eurasian oil than we were at the beginning of the process.

Karzai is talking reconciliation with the Taliban as the only way forward here, and (thug that he is) he has the intelligence to understand that. The Taliban want the US and NATO out of Afghanistan immediately.

This means that the US and NATO will most likely need to withdraw from Afghanistan far sooner than they want to; and for all the blood and money spent, the US is no closer to the installation of those pipelines than was the Bush administration in August of 2001, when it was negotiating with the Taliban for the pipeline rights.

Our brave young men and women who have fighting, getting maimed for life, and dying in Afghanistan, have not been fighting for the security of the United States: they have been fighting, getting maimed, and dying for the potential private profit coming from drugs and oil.

"The War is Worth Waging": Afghanistan's Vast Reserves of Minerals and Natural Gas

The 2001 bombing and invasion of Afghanistan has been presented to World public opinion as a "Just War", a war directed against the Taliban and Al Qaeda, a war to eliminate "Islamic terrorism" and instate Western style democracy.

The economic dimensions of the "Global War on Terrorism" (GWOT) are rarely mentioned. The post 9/11 "counter-terrorism campaign" has served to obfuscate the real objectives of the US-NATO war.

The war on Afghanistan is part of a profit driven agenda: a war of economic conquest and plunder, "a resource war".

License To Drill

At his long-awaited press conference on the Gulf oil disaster last month, President Obama announced a moratorium on new oil drilling and exploration for six months. "We can't do this stuff if we don't have confidence that we can prevent crises like this from happening again," he declared. But while existing rigs may be out of commission for the near future, the administration hasn't exactly put the brakes on new oil and gas drilling ventures. In recent weeks, the government has quietly approved the sale of more than 400 new leases for vast swaths of the Gulf of Mexico. And these contracts—which mark the first step in the drilling process—were subjected to the same slapdash environmental oversight that failed to prevent the BP catastrophe.

‘Anti-Semitism’ Charges Unleashed: Don’t Mention the Mavi Marmara

Since Israel’s May 31 attack on the Mavi Marmara aid ship, there has been growing criticism of Israel’s behavior across much of the world, including from traditional allies like Turkey.

Yet as this criticism has grown abroad, the pressure for Israel’s public to toe the official line on the story (whatever it may be at any given time) has also grown, and in the West there is an increasingly visible effort to lionize the Israeli attack and do demonize even perceived criticism of the Israeli government as “anti-semitism.”

Tension that broke out between Turkey and Israel when the latter killed eight Turkish citizens and a US citizen of Turkish origin in a raid on a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla has resulted in Turkey freezing bilateral relations with Israel -- but joint projects and contracts signed with Israeli companies will remain as they are.
