WA moves to tighten driver's license requirements

Beginning Monday, the state Department of Licensing will require proof of a valid Washington residence address if an applicant doesn't provide a verified Social Security number.

I'll not be giving out my Social Security number, that's for sure! I wonder if utility bills will be accepted.

Personally, I don't think there should be a government issued 'permission' (licence) to drive unless someone has shown a pattern of incompetence, then they need to be tested and licensed. If the pattern continues, then that licence can be revoked and they can be forbidden to drive. I think that's a much fairer system, but of course it's not about fairness... it's about collecting money for the bureaucracy!
