Iraq Body Count: undercounting death with pro-war cash

An official funding document confirms that the Iraq Body Count (IBC), a widely-respected ‘independent’ antiwar group monitoring Iraq War casualties since its inception in 2003, has received core funding from government agencies complicit in the Iraq War, since 2009. A close review of evidence in the public record also reveals that in 2006, the Pentagon used IBC’s data to legitimise US violence under the military occupation of Iraq.

California Water Wars Escalate: Government Orders Massive Supply Cuts To Most Senior Rights Holders

Just two weeks after California's farmers - with the most senior water rights - offered to cut their own water use by 25% (in an attempt to front-run more draconian government-imposed measures), AP reports that the California government has - just as we predicted - ignored any efforts at self-preservation and ordered the largest cuts on record to farmers holding some of the state's strongest water rights. While frackers and big energy remain exempt from the restrictions, Caren Trgovcich, chief deputy director of the water board, explains, "we are now at the point where demand in our system is outstripping supply for even the most senior water rights holders."

Obama administration wants to restructure neighborhoods that are too wealthy and white

This is nothing more than a massive social engineering project, akin to ideas that have failed time and time again in countries like Cuba, China, and Venezuela. It’s failed here in the United States too in places like Decatur, Illinois and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Why? Because poverty can’t be solved with a hand full of cash and a change in your zip code.

MI6 Recalls Secret Agents From Abroad for Fear of Uncover by Russia, China

The British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, has withdrawn its agents out of live operations in foreign countries as they could allegedly be identified by Russia and China with the help of files stolen by former US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, The Sunday Times reports. The newspaper claimed on Sunday citing senior British officials that Moscow has gained access to over 1 million classified files that contain details of secret intelligence techniques and information that could be used to identify British and American spies.

Will Israel’s “whiff from hell” weapon be used to crush US protests?

US police departments are interested in procuring the foul-smelling skunk water that Israeli forces routinely use on Palestinians, according to The Economist. The Economist, which refers to skunk water as “a whiff from hell,” reports that the weapon “has attracted the interest of law-enforcement agencies in America which, after riots in Ferguson and Baltimore, crave better ways to scatter rioters without killing or injuring them.”

I'll post the document Sunday but for now here is the video.

Why Jeb Bush once thought it was cool to shame single moms

For presidential candidates, 'tis the season of the oppo dump. Or perhaps the season of the background check, as campaigns feed unpleasant information about their opponents to reporters, and reporters take their own initiative to fill out a picture of who these candidates really are. Inevitably, the candidates wind up having to defend things they said or did in years past that from today's standpoint seem anachronistic or even appalling.

So it was with Jeb Bush, who turns out to have written a 1995 book called Profiles In Character that lamented the decline of public shaming as a tool of policymaking.

This is What We Think Happened With ObamaTrade Today and Why We Think it Will be WORSE Now

As mentioned in our previous story about what happened with ObamaTrade today, there is a ton of confusion circling the results. Hopefully this post will clarify where we are and where we’re likely headed.

For starters, ObamaTrade is not dead. It wasn’t killed in the House today. Not at all. In fact, the TPA was passed. The TPA was previously thought to have been the most challenging part of the package.

Stopping Obama’s “Legacy” ‘Trade’ Deals: Did Reid Finally Do It?

JW Beats IRS in Court

Calling all conservative activists, citizens and groups who were silenced and harassed by the Obama Internal Revenue Service in the run-up to the 2012 elections and beyond — you should know that we have moved a few steps closer to holding the Obama administration accountable for its criminal misuse of the federal tax-collecting agency.

We are pleased to announce that Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted a Judicial Watch request to issue an order requiring the IRS to provide answers by June 12, 2015, on the status of the Lois Lerner emails the IRS had previously declared lost. Judicial Watch raised questions about the IRS’ handling of the missing emails issue in a June 2 court filing, demanding answers about Lois Lerner’s emails, which had been recovered from backup tapes. Judge Sullivan issued the court order on June 4, 2015.

Haim Saban Threatens Orange and Companies Boycotting Israel with Retribution

During their Las Vegas anti-BDS “Maccabee Summit,” Sheldon Adelson and Haim Saban, sat down for a joint interview with an Israeli Channel 2 TV reporter. She raised the issue of Orange CEO, Stephane Richard’s abject apology to Israel for suggesting his company would like to be rid of its Israeli affiliate. Saban replied with a tone of menace in his voice that any country that is even thinking about boycotting Israel should think twice because the harsh treatment being meted out to Richard is just the beginning for him. In other words, if you’re a corporate CEO and want to keep your job, heed Saban’s warning or you may be out in the street.

Judge orders University of Illinois to release Steven Salaita emails

Illinois Circuit Judge Thomas Difanis today ordered the University of Illinois to release thousands of pages of emails that may cast light on the state institution’s decision to fire Steven Salaita last August.

The decision in the Champaign County Court was a big victory for Salaita, who brought a lawsuit against the university under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Difanis rejected the university’s claims that the request would be too burdensome and agreed with Salaita’s lawyers that there was a significant public interest in whether hiring decisions by the university have been unduly influenced by donors.

Obama’s Stupid Propaganda Stuff

Obama spouts stupid propaganda stuff that is ultimately damaging to the American Republic.

President Barack Obama must know better regarding the crisis in Ukraine, but he insists on reciting the propaganda lines drafted by his neoconservative and “liberal interventionist” advisers blaming everything on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Watching his behavior in the White House over the past six-plus years, I’ve come to suspect that – if he had been a national politician amid the Iraq War fever – he would have gotten in line just like ambitious Sens. Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Joe Biden did. Even as President, a position that gives him enormous power to push back against Official Washington’s “group think,” he won’t.

Hillary's star-studded bash replaced Rangel's party at the Plaza Hotel

It would be understandable if Rep. Charles Rangel feels a bit peeved that Hillary Clinton is throwing a star-studded fundraiser for her presidential campaign June 27 at the Plaza Hotel.

It was supposed to be Mr. Rangel’s party.

According to an insider, the longtime Harlem congressman had planned to throw his annual birthday fundraiser at the same venue, on the same night, with the same stars—Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, and, yes, Hillary Clinton.

But somehow it became a Hillary for America event. Tickets start at $2,700.

WPost Plays Ukraine’s Lapdog

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yatsenyuk and Finance Minister Jaresko are on a U.S. trip to drum up weapons and money to crush the ethnic Russian resistance in the east – and they are finding a lapdog U.S. press that won’t ask them tough questions.

There once was a time when the U.S. news media investigated U.S. imperial adventures overseas, such as Washington-sponsored coups. Journalists also asked tough questions to officials implicated in corruption even if those queries were inconvenient to the desired propaganda themes. But those days are long gone, as the Washington Post demonstrated again this week.

Clinton Cash Goes Missing for a Controversial 2014 NYU Speech

On May 21 of this year, the Clinton Foundation revealed that there was an additional $26.4 million in speaking fees that had been paid to Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton that had not previously been broken out to the public because the fees had been donated to the Clinton Foundation. The payments came from universities, foreign sources, and corporations. The Foundation said the funds had previously been reported to the IRS as “revenue” rather than donations and that is why the donors’ names had not previously been reported.

Two speeches given by Bill Clinton at NYU Commencements are missing from both Hillary’s financial disclosures for herself and Bill, as well as missing from the Clinton Foundation’s disclosures. One of those speeches was highly controversial and not likely to be a missed reporting detail.

Sale of Michigan company to China may haunt Clinton

National Republican Party officials are questioning why Hillary Rodham Clinton did not intervene in the controversial 2013 sale of high-tech battery plants in Michigan to a Chinese firm when she was secretary of State and could have done so.

At a campaign stop in New Hampshire last month, Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate for president, expressed concerns about the sale of A123 Systems — built with millions in government aid — along with those of other new energy firms, to Chinese investors, calling them "unfortunate" and a "serious" problem for high-tech industries in the U.S.

"That does concern me because a lot of foreign companies, particularly Chinese companies ... are looking to buy American companies," she said in response to an entrepreneur who mentioned A123's sale while commenting that venture capital for new energy technology has largely fled overseas.

House Votes To Change Law Due To Trade Agreement, While Insisting That Trade Agreements Don't Change Laws

Two weeks ago, the House Agriculture Committee voted 38-6 to repeal country-of-origin-labeling. (COOL), and now it's the full House's turn. In a 300-131 vote yesterday the "country of Origin Labeling Amendments Act" (HR 2393) passed with the support of a significant number of Democrats as well as the majority of Republicans.

The bill's prompting and passage came after the World Trade Organisation ruled in favor of Canadian farmers, who sued claiming it was "discriminatory" and thus in violation of Free Trade Agreements. The problem? Cattle bought from abroad would have to be segregated from domestic cattle, increasing costs and making imports less desirable.

With Fast Track coming up for a vote -- perhaps even today -- it's curious to see this snippet in the Associated Press report on the vote by the Speaker of the House:

Bernie Sanders pressures Hillary Clinton to take a stand on trade deal

Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont who's running for the Democratic presidential nomination, has been saying for weeks that Hillary Clinton should take a stand on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the 12-nation trade agreement currently under negotiation.

This week, ahead of Friday's House vote on giving the president trade promotion authority, Sanders turned up the heat on Clinton.

"I frankly don't understand how you could be a major candidate for president of the United States -- Hillary Clinton, or anybody else -- and not have an opinion on that issue," he said in an interview with Bloomberg's Al Hunt on the Charlie Rose Show on Thursday. Asked if Clinton's stance amounts to a "cop out," Sanders said yes.
