Yuan trade move 'far reaching'

The Chinese government's decision this month to let exporters in a small number of cities settle their overseas trade in yuan rather than in US dollars has far-reaching implications, according to economists, even though the immediate impact is minimal.

Cash-rich China courts the Caspian

China's prospects as the first major economy to recover gives it a crucial role to lead the world economy as a whole and the Central Asian region in particular. Following up on a $25 billion loan to Russia that China dished out in February, it has agreed to lend $10 billion to Kazakhstan. China expects both the recipients to reciprocate by bolstering their energy supplies to China.

China buys less U.S. debt as reserve growth slows

China bought more than $4.6 billion worth of U.S. Treasury securities in February, despite fears that the United States' top foreign lender may be growing nervous about its massive holdings of U.S. government debt.

"I don't think there's any real evidence of a turn away from U.S. securities, certainly no evidence of a turn away from Treasuries," says Brad Setser, a former Treasury Department economist now with the Council on Foreign Relations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That may change.

Yesterday WE THE PEOPLE sent a message to the world that we will no longer allow ourselves to be taxed into poverty to cover the losses of reckless business ventures.

Foreign investors had to notice.

The Pentagon's Monster in the Mirror

Without a hint of irony, the report expresses concern about, "the purposes to which China's current and future military power will be applied," and suggests that Beijing could even use its armed forces "to ensure access to resources or enforce claims to disputed territories."

Sound familiar? Well, Washington apparently needs to relearn the basic moral principle of universality: What is wrong for others to do, must also be wrong for us.

Report: Chinese Develop Special "Kill Weapon" to Destroy U.S. Aircraft Carriers

With tensions already rising due to the Chinese navy becoming more aggressive in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea, the U.S. Navy seems to have yet another reason to be deeply concerned.

After years of conjecture, details have begun to emerge of a "kill weapon" developed by the Chinese to target and destroy U.S. aircraft carriers.

First posted on a Chinese blog viewed as credible by military analysts and then translated by the naval affairs blog Information Dissemination, a recent report provides a description of an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) that can strike carriers and other U.S. vessels at a range of 2000km.

FROM P.N.A.C. TO F.P.I.: THE REINVENTING OF NEOCONSERVATISM FOR THE ERA OF OBAMA.

Promoting China and Russia once again as ‘threats’ to the US is merely a useful distraction. The threat from China and Russia during the Cold War was grossly exaggerated during that period and both nations are even less a threat today than ever before. The world should not be fooled; the neocons real enemies remain those that oppose Israeli Zionism. Their rhetoric is for a strong America but what is left unsaid is that a strong America means a strong Israel. If the US withdraws into itself to become isolationist again then it will leave Israel exposed.

US warships head for South China Sea after standoff

A potential conflict was brewing last night in the South China Sea after President Obama dispatched heavily armed American destroyers to the scene of a naval standoff between the US and China at the weekend.

Mr Obama’s decision to send an armed escort for US surveillance ships in the area follows the aggressive and co-ordinated manoeuvres of five Chinese boats on Sunday. They harassed and nearly collided with an unarmed American vessel.

Washington accused the Chinese ships of moving directly in front of the US Navy surveillance ship Impeccable, forcing its crew to take emergency action, and to deploy a high-pressure water hose to deter the Chinese ships. Formal protests were lodged with Beijing after the incident.

Rapid Declines in Manufacturing Spread Global Anxiety - Total Collapse

The New York Times World Business Nelson D. Schwartz Manufacturing has fallen off the cliff, and it’s certainly the biggest decline since the Second World War,” said Dirk Schumacher, senior European economist with Goldman Sachs in Frankfurt.

The pattern of manufacturing and trade ominously recalls how the financial crisis of 1929 grew into the Great Depression: tightening credit and consumer fear reduced demand for manufactured goods in one country after another, creating a downward spiral that reduced global trade.

Analysis: so much more than a naval water fight

No shots were fired, no one was injured, and the most potent weapon employed was a water hose. By the standards of modern war, Sunday's encounter between a US surveillance vessel and a group of Chinese naval ships, was a drop in the ocean — but 48 hours later the ripples were still spreading.

China Reports Falling Prices

The New York Times KEITH BRADSHER March 10, 2009 HONG KONG — Most economists still do not expect the Chinese economy to suffer a broad decline in prices this year, but statistics released on Tuesday did provide disturbing whiffs of possible deflation.

Consumer prices were 1.6 percent lower last month than a year earlier, the first decline since December, 2002, the National Bureau of Statistics announced in Beijing. February’s result represented a precipitous drop from an inflation rate of 8.7 percent in February of last year, when rising prices were a top priority for the Chinese government.

Chinese coin counterfeiter legal in China

Isn’t he worried that the Secret Service or some other U.S. government agency will come after him for making counterfeit U.S. coins? After all, the coins struck by the U.S. Mint, regardless of date, are all still legal tender, and thus subject to U.S. coin counterfeiting laws. It is illegal for him to sell these coins in the United States, even via eBay.

Jinghuashei responds by claiming that he is operating within the confines of the Hobby Protection Act, a U.S. law that requires all nongenuine numismatic items produced after 1973 to be permanently and conspicuously counterstamped with the word COPY. When informed that his eBay auctions are not in compliance with this law, because he is using a punch that says REPLICA, he seems unconcerned.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The situation is worse for collectors of ancient coins. There are no laws to prevent crooks from creating fake ancient Roman and Greek coins for sale to collectors. Oddly enough, however, certain historically important known fakes have become more valuable than the originals.

With Hillary Clinton having signaled to the Chinese dictators that we will beg for their money and ignore unfair trade practices and even human rights violations, it will be left up to President Obama to seal the deal.

The truth is starting to seep out. Because of the need for more money to finance the latest bailout-the Obama economic stimulus plan-America is going further in debt to the Chinese Communists. Our country is officially being sold to the highest bidder. And we have striking confirmation of this fact from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Commentary: Will Obama see sense about nuclear threat?

THE possibility that, in an Obama administration, science will drive rational public policy provides an unprecedented opportunity to deal with a gnawing yet persistently neglected threat to the world: nuclear weapons.

No government is likely to declare how many strategic nuclear warheads it has, but the US and Russia are thought to possess at least 5000 apiece. The 2002 Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty required each nation to have no more than 2200 "operationally deployed" strategic warheads by 2012, yet this represents no real progress towards disarmament, as the target number is essentially identical to that proposed at the 1997 summit on nuclear arms reduction between Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin in Helsinki, Finland.

Americans know that China has financed much of their nation’s public and private debt.
